Elephantine ( Bethlehem).

Post by Ethan »

ἐλέφας, ἐλέφαντος ( Elephant)
- This word was first used by Ancient Greeks and originally refers too Ivory (not the animal) ( used in Homer, Hesiod & Pindar )
- The Latin word for Ivory, is Eboreus , Ebur .

אלופ ( ALUF )
- Thousand Gk. χιλιάς ( Chilias ) Lt. Mille > (Building fitted to grind grain ) Silo .
- Green Fodder for Cattle Gk. χιλός ( Chilos) ( Psalms 50:10 )

* in both Greek & Hebrew, χιλ- means 'fodder' (hay-stack) and 'thousand' , hence the expression "needle in a haystack" ( numerous) i.e thousand

(word extension)
AKL(אֹכֶל) "Food"
Culina " Food" ( Latin )
φάγημα (Phaghma) "food"
φάγεσθε (Phagesthe) "food"
ἔδεσμα (Edesma)
אָפָה ( Aphah) * Baked meat
לֶחֶם ( Lechem ) * Baked Meat/Bread
κλάσμα ( Klasma) *remnants of food
κλάω ( Klaw) *breaking of bread
λάγανα ( Lagana) *a thin broad cake

Thus the Hebrew word ' Lechem' is cognate with ' Phaghma, Klasma, Lagana e.c.t

* Gen 41:56-7
- Joseph opened up store houses ( Beth Lechem )
- nations came to Joseph to buy ( Agorazw)
- Lechem > Alechem > Alephen > ἐλέφαντος
* Beth Lechem is Elephantine
* Identifying the Elephant with Elephantine is a matter of folk-etymology
* Elephantine is a store-house, Granary , Market-place, House of Bread

Leviticus 2:6
- Thou shalt part (meat or bread) into pieces
- κλάσματα ( Klasmata) * remnants of food

In this verse, 'break apart bread' ( morsel) is פַּת/פָּתַת (Pathath)
- Gen 18:5 " morsel of bread "
- LXX ἄρτον καὶ φάγεσθε , PAGESTHE > PATHATH
- פַּת/פָּתַת (Pathath) derives from φάγεσθε ( Phagesthe)

φάγεσθε (Phagesthe) is the root word for פֶּסַח ( Pacach ) "Passover offerings " , NT - πάσχα ( Pasxa) .

Feast of Unleavened bread, known as מַצָּה (Matstsah ) is found in Aeschylus Agamemnon Verse 1035 ( written around 500 BCE )
"or even Alkmene’s son, men say, once endured to be sold and to eat the bread (μάζης) of slavery."
- μάζης' (Mazhs) = מַצָּה (Matstsah ) " Unleavened Bread or Barley Cake"

The Romans called the Greeks "barley eaters." The poor's barley bread would often even contain chaff in it, as the flour wouldn't have been finely sifted, it was also the food of the Romans gladiators and Spartan Helots.

The Ides of Nisan, coincides with the Latin festival Anna Perenna

* Barley-Cakes ( Matzo, μάζης ) are sacred to Anna Perenna
* Anna Perenna (Ides of March) Passover/Feast of Matzo ( Ides of Nisan)
* Ovid identifies Anna Perenna with the sister of Dido ( founder of Carthage)
* The ' Passover' Letter of Elephantine ( Passover is Spartan in origin )

The primary historian who documents Elephantine is Herodotus.

Herodotus, The Histories, Book 2, chapter 30
From this city you make a journey by water equal in distance to that by which you came from Elephantine to the capital city of Ethiopia, and you come to the land of the Deserters.

These Deserters are called Asmakh, which translates, in Greek, as “those who stand on the left hand of the king”. [2]

These once revolted and joined themselves to the Ethiopians, two hundred and forty thousand Egyptians of fighting age. The reason was as follows.

In the reign of Psammetichus, there were watchposts at Elephantine facing Ethiopia, at Daphnae of Pelusium facing Arabia and Assyria, and at Marea facing Libya.

And still in my time the Persians hold these posts as they were held in the days of Psammetichus; there are Persian guards at Elephantine and at Daphnae. Now the Egyptians had been on guard for three years, and no one came to relieve them; so, organizing and making common cause, they revolted from Psammetichus and went to Ethiopia. [4] Psammetichus heard of it and pursued them; and when he overtook them, he asked them in a long speech not to desert their children and wives and the gods of their fathers. Then one of them, the story goes, pointed to his genitals and said that wherever that was, they would have wives and children. [5] So they came to Ethiopia, and gave themselves up to the king of the country; who, to make them a gift in return, told them to dispossess certain Ethiopians with whom he was feuding, and occupy their land. These Ethiopians then learned Egyptian customs and have become milder-mannered by intermixture with the Egyptians.
Herodotus key-points.

Ἐλεφαντίνης ( Elephantinhs)
- Metropolin of Aithiopia
- Ἀσμάχ (Asmax) " those who stand on the left hand of the King" (ἀριστερῆς χειρὸς)
- αὐτομόλοισι (Automoloioe ) "deserters'
- φυλακαί (Phulakai) "watchposts"
- Δάφνῃσι τῇσι Πηλουσίῃσι ( Daphnse Phlousihsi)
- the community were Carians & Ionians
- Elephantine was one of three 'Watch posts'

Daphne Pelusium
- sacred to the local cat-goddess Bastet (αἴλουρος) 'Ailouros '
- Daphne is Tahpanhes (תְּחַפְנְחֵס)

Jeremiah 44:1 ( three watch posts)
The Jews which dwell in the land of Egypt
- Migdol (watch-tower)
- Tahpanhes
- Noph ( country of Pathros)

The word Tahpanhes (Daphne) is a Greek word in origin and the name appears in 1 Kings 11:19, as an Egyptian queen who married 'Hadad' during the time of David-Solomon, which is anachronistic, since Daphne was founded by King Psammetichus (664–610 BCE ) as a garrison of foreign mercenaries mostly Carians & Ionian Greeks. According too Herodotus these Greeks revolted and went to Ethiopia ( the deserters) , thus the 'Jewish' community in Elephantine was established Ionians and Carians

Daphne
- Zaphnath Paneach * Genesis 41:45
- Phinehas * Exodus 6:25 - 1 Samuel 1:3
- Hophni * 1 Samuel 1:3
- Tahpenes * 1 Kings 11:19
- Tahpanhes * Jeremiah 44:1

Genesis 41:46, the name given too Joseph in the LXX is Ψονθομ φανηχ

Ψονθομ φανηχ
- Psonthom Phanhs
- suspiciously similar too Psammetichus (Ψαμμητίχου)
- anachronistic, the story of Joseph would be set after/during the reign of Psammetichus [664–610 BC]
- Joseph was either Ionian or Carian

Shekels
* The first ruler to have officially set standards of weight and money was Pheidon
*Minting begin in the late 7th century BCE amongst the Greek cities of Asia Minor,
* Shekels translates Argurion (ἀργύριον) " coin "
* Shekel (שֶׁקֶל) is σήκωμα (Shekuma) "standard weight"
