Judges 7:1

Post by Ethan »

(KJV) — Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley

The LXX reads "Well of Harod" (עין חרד) as "Land of Harod" (γῆν Αρωεδ) as If LXX is reading עיר חרד.

Moreh (מורה) in LXX is Αβωρ, this is the LXX reading of חבור/Habor

2Ki 18:11 (KJV) — king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes

ἐν Αβωρ ποταμῷ Γωζαν / בחבור נהר גוזן

The Bible confuses wherever Habor or Gozan are names of rivers or are cities by a river.

In Judges 7:1 it mentions מדין (Midian) and 2 Kings 18:11 reads מדי (Medes).

Harod resembles Herod (Ἡρῴδης) and Aretas (Αρέτας)

Jerubbaal (ירבעל) is a varient of Jeroboam (ירבעם).

1Ki 11:26 Jeroboam the son of Nebat
Ιεροβοαμ υἱὸς Ναβατ | ירבעם בנ-נבט.

Aretas I is the first known King of the Nabataeans

The LXX pronounces נבט as Nabat (Ναβατ)

Strabo 2:35
The western extremities of Judæa towards Casius are occupied by Idumæans, and by the lake [Sirbonis]. The Idumæans are Nabatæans. When driven from their country by sedition, they passed over to the Jews, and adopted their customs.91 The greater part of the country along the coast to Jerusalem is occupied by the Lake Sirbonis, and by the tract contiguous to it; for Jerusalem is near the sea, which, as we have said,92 may be seen from the arsenal of Joppa.93 These districts (of Jerusalem and Joppa) lie towards the north; they are inhabited generally, and each place in particular, by mixed tribes of Egyptians, Arabians, and Phœnicians. Of this description are the inhabitants of Galilee, of the plain of Jericho, and of the territories of Philadelphia and Samaria,94 surnamed Sebaste by Herod;95 but although there is such a mixture of inhabitants, the report most credited, [one] among many things believed respecting the temple [and the inhabitants] of Jerusalem, is, that the Egyptians were the ancestors of the present Jews.

According to Strabo, Idumæans are Nabatæans.
Ναβαταῖοι ~ Ἰδουμαῖοι.

Plutarch Demetrius 7
Demetrius was sent to bring into subjection the Arabs known as Nabataean

According to Plutarch, Nabataean are Arabians.
Ἀράβων τοὺς καλουμένους Ναβαταίους

Pliny the Elder, The Natural History 12:44
From the confines of the country which produces cinnamon and cassia, cancamum1 and tarum2 are imported; but these substances are brought by way of the Nabatæan Troglodytæ, a colony of the Nabatæi.

Do you think Harod/Aretas has something to do with the "island" of Aradus mentioned by Strabo beside Tylos as the land of origin of the Phoenicians?

To me, Aradus and Aretas sound awfully similar.
