Enoch 6:6

Post by Ethan »

I was reading though Enoch and verse 6 is very interesting since it concerns the meaning of a word.

Enoch 6.6
And they were in all two hundred; who descended of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it.

ησαν δε αυτοι διακοσιοι οι καταβαντες εν ταις ημεραις Ιαρεδ εις την κορυφην του Ερμονιειμ ορους, και εκαλεσαν το ορος Ερμωμ, καθοτι ωμοσαν και ανεθεματισαν αλληλους εν αυτω.

The key verb is ανεθεματισαν and parallels Numbers 21:2-3

Numbers 21:3
ἐπεκάλεσαν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου ἀνάθεμα
ויקרא שם־המקום חרמה

ἀνάθεμα is a translation of חרמה cf. חרמון/Hermon.

Numbers 21:2
ἀναθεματιῶ αὐτὸν καὶ τὰς πόλεις αὐτοῦ
החרמתי את־עריהם

ἀνάθεμα
1. anything dedicated
2. accursed thing
3. dedicated to service

This noun terminates with -μα, so the actual Hebrew homologues is מתנה and מנחה/ἀνάθεμα.

מנחת, מתנה
1. anything dedicated (Genesis 4:3
2. accursed thing (Isaiah 1:31)
3. dedicated to service (Numbers 18:6)

The cognitive reading of the verbs is through ἱερεύω

ἱερεύω
consecrate, devote to a god.

החרמתי : ἱέρευσα, ἱερατεύσα (Alt)
חרמה : ἱεράτευμα "Body of priests" (Alt)

The mountain was consecrated too Ἑρμῆς (Hermes) hence Ἕρμαιών(חרמון) "called after Hermes" and also means temple of Hermes, a popular deity among the Phoenicians.

In Numbers 21:4, they journeyed from Mount Hor (Hermon), so the previous passage deal with the name of Hermon and with the verb, ἱεράτευμα (body of priest) affirms Enoch 6:7, here a temple and priesthood was dedicated to Hermes.

Enoch 6:7 (Body of priests)
These are the names of their leaders: Sêmîazâz, their leader, Arâkîba, Râmêêl, Kôkabîêl, Tâmîêl, Râmîêl, Dânêl, Êzêqêêl, Barâqîjâl, Asâêl, Armârôs, Batârêl, Anânêl, Zaqîêl, Samsâpêêl, Satarêl, Tûrêl, Jômjâêl, Sariêl. 8. These are their chiefs of tens.

Numbers 33:39 - Aaron was an hundred and twenty and three years old when he died in Mount Hor (Hermon)

The leader is named Σεμιαζα, a transliteration of Hebrew definable through a Greek adjective.

Σεμιαζα—Φοινικιστής "wearer of purple, one of the highest ranks"

Enoch 7:2
They became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells
Αι δε εν γαστρι λαβουσαι ετεκοσαν γιγαντας μεγαλους εκ πηχων τρισχιλιων

The Septuagint translates γιγαντας from either נפלים or רפאים and yet these same types of words are used to describe various people in the Old Testament.

נפלים (Nephilim)
νέφος 'cloud, metaphor, cloud of men e.g. Τρώων νέφος (Trojans)
νεφελίζω 'wrapped in clouds" (נפילים)

רפאים (Rephaim)
εὐτραφῶν 'well-fed, fat, well-grown"

חברון (Hebron)
ὑπερόγκων 'of excessive bulk or size, swelled to a great size'

ענקים (Anakim)
εὐόγκων 'of good size, bulky, massive

עמלק (Amalek)
ἁνδρόγίγας 'mighty-men, gigantic men

עוג (Og)
Ὠγύγης 'Gigantic

שידים (Sidim)
Τιτάν 'Titan

חנוך/Ενωχ (Enoch) from the verb, ἐγκαινίζω.

John 10:22
It was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication (ἐγκαίνια)

This also derives Hanukkah/חנוכה.

Deuteronomy 20:5
חנכו : ἐνεκαίνισεν
יחנכן : ἐγκαινιεῗ

1 Kings 8:63, 2 Chronicles 7:5
ויחנכו : ἐνεκαίνισεν

Ezra 6:16
חנכת : ἐγκαίνια

Daniel 3:2
חנכת : ἐγκαινισμὸν

If the Greek verb is suffixed -ίζω, the Hebrew cognate will be Hiphil form.

אחניך = ἐγκαινίζω
אודיע = γνωρίζω
אושיע = σωΐζω
אוחיל = ἐλπίζω
אמטיר = νοτίζω
אשמיע = ἀκουτίζω
אשכיל = σοφίζω
אקטיל = κτενίζω
אהציל = ἐκσῴΐζω
אריב = ἐρίζω
אציע = κοιτάζω

(verb > noun)
רקיע = τροχίζω
ידיד = ἀγαπάζω

ω (tense) fronts the verb in Hebrew.

σοφ-ίζ-ω = ω-σοφ-ίζ = א־שכ־יל

This affirms in the Septuagint that mostly translates Hiphil into -ίζω.

Enoch (חנוך)/Enich (חניך) ?-ικός cf. φοίνικος, ἑνικός, ἔνδικος?

Gen 4:17 - City of Enoch (East of Eden)
Enoch 6:6 - Enoch dedicated a temple-priesthood at Mt. Hermon

Eden means πέδον, πεδίον "Plain" is another word for בקעא (Beqaa) 'Plains of Lebanon'.
- Ezekiel 31:16; the trees of Eden are the choice and best of Lebanon.

The City of Enoch is deduced too Niha, Lebanon

نيحا‎/ניחא "Niha" (Aramaic) (Nyka)
- City of Enoch
- Νῦσα/Nysa ?

This location is filled with the remains of ancient Hermonian temples.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temples_of_Mount_Hermon
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niha,_Zahl

There is a sacred building made of hewn blocks of stone on the summit of Mount Hermon. Known as Qasr Antar, it was the highest temple of the ancient world, sitting at 2,814 metres (9,232 ft) above sea level.

Enoch 13:7
I went off and sat down at the waters of Dan (Δαν), in the land of Dan, to the south of Hermon

Genesis 14:14 : pursued them unto Dan (Δαν/דן)
εκ δεξιων Ερμωνειειμ : מימין החרמונים "south of Hermon"

With the given geographical information in Enoch 13 and comparing to Pliny the Elder, this location can be pin-pointed, Caesarea Philippi Paneas.
Cæsarea Philippi also bore the name of Panias (Πανεάς). It was situate at the south of Mount Hermon, on the Jordan, just below its source.

d and b interchange between Latin, Greek and Phoenician. Δαν/Παν/Βαν.

This was one of the Decapolis (10-cities), is that why Dan is one of the ten in Genesis 30:6, if that is true then written post-63 bce.

Enoch 32:4
That tree is in height like the fir, and its leaves are like those of the Carob tree.
ομοιον το δενδρον εκεινο στροβιλεα το υψος τα δε φυλλα αυτου κερατια ομοια.

Its fruit is like the clusters of the vine, very beautiful: and the fragrance of the tree penetrates afar.
ο δε καρπος αυτου ωσει βοτρυες αμπελου ιλαροι λιαν, η δε οσμη αυτου διετρεχεν πορρω απο του δενδρον

Ezekiel 31:5
Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field/

Ezekiel 31:8
The cedars [ארז] in the garden of God could not hide him
The fir trees [ברוש] were not like his boughs *Sept. πίτυες "Pine tree"
The chesnut [ערמן] trees were not like his branches *Sept. ἐλάται "silver fir"

ערמן/κερατωνία "Carob tree"
ברוש/κυπάρισσος "Cypress tree"
ארז/ἄρκευθος : Juniper tree (Phoenician cedar)

Enoch 32:4 describes its fruit like the clusters of vines, so perhaps its referring to the Palm tree, a sacred tree in Judaism, for the Menorah resembles it and depicted on coins, always with seven branches.

Genesis 2:9
The tree of life
The tree of knowledge of good and evil.

החיים : ή ζωή "Life" (Feminine)
הדעת : ό γνωστός "Knowledge" (Masculine) . טוב/καλός רע/πονηρός (masculine)

Genesis 2:17
The male-tree, thou shalt not eat.

The gall-insect, Cynips psenes lives in the fruit of the wild fig and male palm (Hdt.1.193, Ar.Av.590, , Arist.HA557b26, Thphr.HP2.8.1)

Herodotus 1.193
The Assyrians tend these like figs, and chiefly in this respect, that they tie the fruit of the palm called male by the Greeks to the date-bearing palm, so that the gall-fly may enter the dates and cause them to ripen, and that the fruit of the palm may not fall; for the male palms, like unripened figs, have gall-flies in their fruit.

Enoch 32:1 (North Lebanon)
I looked towards the north over the mountains I saw seven mountains full of choice nard and fragrant trees and cinnamon and pepper.

πέπερι : Pepper, Piper nigrum
κιννάμωμον : Cinnamon cassia
σχῖνος : Mastic tree
νάρδος : Spikenard

Songs 4:13
Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard,.

Songs 4:14
Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices

Songs 4:15
A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon.

נרד : νάρδος : Spikenard
כרכם : κρόκος : Saffron"
קנה : σχῖνος : Mastic"
קנמון : κιννάμωμον : Cinnamon Cassia"
מר : μύρρα : Myrrh"
אהל : ἀλόη : Aleo vera
בשם : ϝὀσμή : Scent

One of the earliest uses of mastic was as chewing gum; hence, the name. Mastic-flavored chewing gum is sold in Syria, Lebanon. Some scholars identify the bakha mentioned in the Bible with the mastic plant. Bakha appears to be derived from Hebrew: בכא‎, weeping, and is thought to refer to the "tears" of resin secreted by the mastic plant.

πέπερι (Bell of Lebanon Pepper)

Aleppo pepper, is a variety of Capsicum annuum used as a spice, particularly in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. Also known as the Halaby pepper,[1] it starts as pods, which ripen to a burgundy color, and then are semi-dried, de-seeded, then crushed or coarsely ground.[2] The pepper flakes are known in Turkey as pul biber, and in Armenia as Haleb biber. The pepper is named after Aleppo, a long-inhabited city along the Silk Road in northern Syria, and is grown in Syria and Turkey. (τό πέπερι > Al eppo > Aleppo).

Enoch is purely Lebanese.

The connection between Eden and Pan is through Abel, his name, הבל means ὁ Πάν, with the article, because ל & ν interchanges between Phoenician and Greek. הבל (ho Pā́n) and analogue too εὔμαλος "rich in sheep".

In Genesis 4:2, the word צאן cognates to the Doric, κτάνος. In Phoenician, צ is a diphthong of κτ. κτ-ά-ν/צ־א־ן.

According to the Greek historian Plutarch, Pan is the only Greek god who actually dies suggesting that with the "death" of Pan came the advent of theology. the news of Pan's death came to one Thamus. Pan is associated with goats parallels the scapegoat, Marsyas and Jesus, mythical goats that are skinned for the hubris to be turned into wine-skin.

האדם : αὐτόχθων
חוה : ζωή
