It's easy for Aurelius to promote Stoicism when he's the emperor.

Diogenes and Cioran had it right.

Actually I see it the other way around. How difficult it must be to gain enlightenment when you are ruler of the world. We have it relatively easy. If we can't become enlightened we should be whipped in the streets and chased with dogs. It's all about overcoming egoism. If you are young, beautiful, gifted, rich, powerful you almost have to be retarded not to be egoistic. When you are old, ugly, poor and hopeless the world is helping along attaining self-mastery. That's why the ancients thanked God as bad things were happening to them. It was assisting the unselfing of themselves. The danger came when phonies saw that these ascetics were attracting a crowd. The message is quite simple otherwise.

I don't know. I see someone like Aurelius talk about Stocism and my inner Marxist gets triggered.

Also, isn't there a stark contrast between the Stoicism of Zeno and the Greek, and the Soicism of Aurelius and the Romans? From what I've read the Greeks didn't have the romanticism that the Romans had, and their position was "life sucks, deal with it".

You know what Nietzsche says “Of all evil I deem you capable: Therefore I want good from you. Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws.”
