why the Fourth Gospel ignores the Galilee

Post by Giuseppe »

I reverse the question: why the synoptical have the Galilee.

A similar question: why in the synoptics, Jesus goes to Tyre and Sydon to heal the Cananite woman, while in the Fourth Gospel Jesus goes to Cana. A possibility is that the voyage to Tyre to heal a Cananite woman was designed to eclipse the marriage at Cana.

Could the same happen with "Galilee" ?

In the Fourth Gospel, Jesus takes from John his disciples. Not in Galilee.

In the synoptics, Jesus goes to Galilee to take his disciples. Well distant from John AND ONLY AFTER the arrest of John.

This sounds suspected.

The suspicion is raised that Galilee is introduced to have Jesus debtly distant from John the Baptist. To point out that his disciples were not co-opted from the disciples of John. They were fishers to point out the fact that, even physically, they were distant from the territory where John had his influence.

John worked in the wilderness of Judea where he had his disciples, while Jesus works near the sea of Galilee where he had his disciples, themselves being on sea.

There is a contrast: wilderness versus sea.

That contrast is introduced to distance Jesus's disciples from John's disciples, contra factum that someone, in the real past, accused that the disciples of Jesus were really the disciples of John.

A possibility is that the embarrassing thing was a story about a Jesus descended from heaven and who stole from John the disciples of John, and against the John's will.

Giuseppe --

PLZ look at Galilee in its proper Setting. The Hasmoneans gave Settlements to the Priesthood in Galilee. There is an interesting Story with Settlements, the numbers of Settlements, the Lists of Settlements found in various Synagogues and so on but the important thing is that the 24 Mishmarot Priestly Groups use Galilee as their Homes from which they travel to Jerusalem for their Service.

There is no "Heaven Story" and the Priests would have been appalled to see what happened with the Inversion of the story of their Service.

“A difficult question is why the Course of Jehoiarib is attributed to Meiron. In addition, several Piyyutim clearly indicate that among the Jews of the Galilee, it was also believed that the Hasmoneans belonged to the Course of Immer (elizur, 2004, 307), and surprisingly, this Course is among the only ones attributed to a settlement in Upper Galilee (Jabnit, a few kilometers from Meiron). Did the Jews of the Galilee preserve traditions concerning the settlement of members of the Hasmonean family in the Upper Galilee? At the present stage of research, we cannot answer these questions..."

Uzi Leibner, Settlement and History in Galilee..., ISBN-13: 978-3161498718 ISBN-10: 3161498712

Actually, we can now answer these questions. The NT faithfully records details of the Mishmarot Service.

Mark 1: 7 (RSV):

[7] And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

John is of Bilgah. The character created by the Romans, the "Jesus character", is of "Immer"
Giuseppe, there is no story of "Jesus descended from Heaven and stole disciples of John." NONE.

The "Real Story" here is that there was a Coup planned against the Hellenistic Herodians in Jerusalem, mirroring Leviticus 26 ("Mirroring" may not do it Justice, considering the "Golden Eagle Episode" which is a proximate cause of the Coup Attempt.) Bilgah (John) is on Duty for the start of this Passover and in three days, the "destroyed" Temple will be rebuilt - rededicated - by the Priests of Immer on the Sabbath. Not the High Sabbath of the first day of the Feast Week, but the weekly Sabbath.

Come out of the clouds, Giuseppe. Look elsewhere:

Revelation 5: 10 (RSV):

[10] and hast made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on earth."

The Galilee is periphery. You go to periphery only because there is something of highly embarrassing in the center.
