Close to 70 per cent of voters backed the change.Catholic bishops did not put forward a defense of the law, though one Muslim leader spoke in its favor.

In 2015 police investigated the comedian Stephen Fry after he described God as “utterly evil, capricious and monstrous,” among other denigrating comments, for a show on the state broadcaster RTE.
Police dropped the investigation after deciding an insufficient number of people were outraged.

The Irish constitution currently states that publishing or uttering "blasphemous, seditious, or indecent matter is an offence, which shall be punishable in accordance with law," with those found guilty facing a fine of 25,000 euros ( roughly $28,600).

Unlike Ireland's recent constitutional referendums on same-sex marriage in 2015 and liberalising abortion in May 2018, the vote on blasphemy has not inspired strong feelings in the country.

She was then shoved and spat at, the autobiography claims. Days later, Bibi was accused of blasphemy. She has denied the charge.
Bibi’s case, the first in which a woman has been sentenced to death by hanging for blasphemy in Pakistan, has drawn widespread condemnation. Pope Benedict XVI was among those who calling for her to be freed in 2010.

Asia Bibi: Pakistan acquits Christian woman on death row

A Pakistani court has overturned the death sentence of a Christian woman convicted of blasphemy, a case that has polarised the nation.
Asia Bibi was convicted in 2010 after being accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad in a row with her neighbours.
They were harvesting fruit when a row broke out about a bucket of water. The women said that because she had used a cup, they could no longer touch it, as her faith had made it unclean.
