parallel passages in NEH-EZRA-1ESD-2CHR
I was posting to reddit and mentioned the parallel comparison of the English translations of MT Ezra-Nehemiah & 2 Chron & their Old Greek translations as well as the two Greek translations of 1 & 2 Esdras. These all seem to have shared some common sources, as the direction of influence i...

Re: A collection of episodes about various failed Messianists of the past was the Earliest Gospel
I do not want to necessarily assume that these insurrectionists you propose would have to be named Jesus. ok, but I don't like to misinterpret you, when I say that your position is that the principal historical figure who was remembered in the Gospel tradition was a rebel Galilean crucified by orde...

Re: A collection of episodes about various failed Messianists of the past was the Earliest Gospel
Here is another strong difference between Batsch's view and DCHindley's view. DCHindley may even concede that the Gospel Jesus is an amalgam of more Jesuses, and even so he may insist that THE historical Jesus lived under Pilate. Why? The DCHindley's answer would be that a such Jesus would be the f...

Re: A collection of episodes about various failed Messianists of the past was the Earliest Gospel
g, I hesitated to respond at first, as you know we are often at loggerheads, but I started to look at the issue. IIUC, you are proposing that the earliest Christian good-news began with an account detailing several failed attempts to establish a Judean 'Kingdom of God' on earth, followed by the earl...

Re: Critical Study on Chronology of the Ancient World
As you may know, the subject of Tacitus has come up here in the not too distant past. The legendary member "spin" was interested in it as it related to whether these mss had originally spelled "Christus" as "Chrestus." However, I think he supported it authenticity, alt...

Re: Fitzgerald, Paul & 'Paul'
In earlier posts from years ago, I noted a tendency in the Pauline writings to include a form of the definite article ho ("the") with the Greek word kurios ("lord") when referring to Jesus/Jesus Christ/Christ Jesus. Alternatively, kurios seems to be primarily anarthrous (without...

Re: Plato and the Pentateuch
Various and contrasting ideologies seem to exist in the Five books of Moses. I am reminded of The Land is Mine: Six Biblical Land Ideologies , by Norman C. Habel (1993). Habel finds six different, and somewhat incompatible land tenancy ideologies in the Five books of Moses. There could be dozens, ma...

Re: Visions and the Shepherd of Hermas
Great post, GakuseiDon. I was reminded of the "Gospel of Peter" where the two tall angels escort a third between them, who was even taller. A voice from heaven asks "Have you preached to those who sleep?" and the tallest one replies "Yes." An obsession over the fate of ...

Re: Visions and the Shepherd of Hermas
There are unmistakable allusions to many NT books in the Shepherd, and while you don't see Jesus or Christ, you do see a lot of "Son of God."
