Re: National origin stories
Spartans claimed a legendary origin with Lacedaemon, a son of Zeus who had the same name as the country (named after him), who married Sparta, who had the same name as the capital city (named after her). Their first king was the legendary Lelex, a native of the land. The accounts disagree about whet...

Re: "Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John" is an attack against John the Baptist
So it seems to me that this dig against John is referring to something external to Evangelion, something which presented John differently, presenting John as a forerunner to Jesus. Based on our knowledge of the synoptic gospels, the most obvious candidate here is Mark (especially if we view Luke, M...

Re: "Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John" is an attack against John the Baptist
One note here is that Luke 7:27 as it appears in Evangelion does seem to be aimed at John. In particular, in my approach in representing this passage, it is aimed at John by way of contrast. Essentially, it negates the role of John as forerunner. Instead of presenting John as a forerunner of Jesus, ...

Re: "Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John" is an attack against John the Baptist
I also referred to Epiphanius to make this argument about the other passage: Dispensing with the idea that Tertullian had the gospel of the Marcionites in front of him helps solve a riddle found in Epiphanius. Epiphanius, Panarion 42.11.6: <η>. Παρηλλαγμένον τό «μακάριος ὃς οὐ μὴ σκανδαλισθῇ ἐν ἐμοί...

Re: "Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John" is an attack against John the Baptist
Luke 5:33 or something else like it is seems to be attested multiply. Ephrem, Hymns Against Heresies, 47.4 "Even the stranger... knew... as a groom every day (joy and) delight—while John lived in sorrow, renunciation, and fasting. The sons of the bridal chamber cannot fast. The people of the Cr...

Re: "Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John" is an attack against John the Baptist
Now, if Marcion based his Evangelion on Mark, then only Marcion could be the first author of the logion: Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John ...So, how could that logion reflect the idea of John forerunner of Jesus if the only gospel, preceding Marcion, where the idea of Joh...

Re: "Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John" is an attack against John the Baptist
Ken is condemned to assume that Marcion corrupted Luke, if he insists in this his interpretation of the logion . How can we decide what the interpretation of the logion is? Or are you possibly suggesting that we can't and that we have to decide on the basis of whether we consider Luke prior or not?

Re: "Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John" is an attack against John the Baptist
Where Ken's interpretation is wrong is in the fact that in the Evangelion nowhere it is said that John is a forerunner of Jesus. Really, the idea that John is forerunner of Jesus could come in clear terms only by a simple episode: the baptism of Jesus by John. But a such episode is absent in the Ev...
