Re: Marcion was an 'Anti-Semite' (Anti-Jewish)

Marcion deliberately purged his canon of the Jewish; Tyson (2006) p.198: It is unarguable that Marcion’s canon did not include any of the Hebrew Scriptures ... I’m not going to track down examples or details here, so I’ll just play the game of dueling scholars. BeDuhn, in his The First New Testamen...

The Universal Church

Perhaps along with writing a few harmonizing texts themselves, I wonder if those individuals that gathered together the NT in the second century had at least two primary goals. The first, mentioned by Irish1975 above. First, to gather together as many of the diverse Christian texts in use at the tim...

Re: Mentions of written gospels in Romans 16:25-27

IMHO 16:25-27 is a paraphrase of Paul's message by a post-Pauline writer. This doxology may have originated as an ending to the 14 chapter version of Romans which appears to have circulated in the early church. (If you regard the 14 chapter version as original and chapters 15 and 16 as both later a...

Re: Mentions of written gospels in Romans 16:25-27

But προφητικῶν is the genitive of the adjective προφητικός, not the genitive of the noun προφήτης. Together they form a compound genitive object of the preposition. So I don't see anything the matter with "through the prophetic writings." But on substance I agree with Robert. A reference ...

Re: Mentions of written gospels in Romans 16:25-27

Romans 16:25-27 can be interpreted to mean that the Gospels have been already written by the time the epistle was written: Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel , the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ...

Re: The Pauline Satan: not a Cosmic Power

Re: Satan in Paul's letters Concerning false apostles being like Satan, "for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light" in 1 Cor 11.14 -- This image of Satan may be informed by the idea that the serpent who tempted Eve in the garden was Satan. I think a likely candidate for the id...

Re: Pierson on the two Pauls

But why does Paul appear to describe his conversion as the moment when God revealed his Son IN him, not TO him? That doesn't seem to sit well with everything else we think we know. The Greek term ἐν has a wide range of uses --- https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/resolveform?type=exact&lookup=...

I had to chuckle a bit when I read your opening line here. Just a few days earlier I was tempted to respond to one of your previous posts with something along the lines of --- 'like Eisenman on acid'

John2, I'm just not interested in raking such arguments about Acts back and forth over the coals.

Re: Paul --- A Criminal and a Liar

The later 'legends about Paul' presented in the Acts of the Apostles don't play a role in my understanding of Paul's letters.
