Re: reported: "Scholars Publish New Papyrus With Early Sayings of Jesus"
Are you claiming only that another theory can explain the evidence equally well as the theory that the author of P. Oxy 5575 primarily followed Luke 12 but conflated it with material from Matthew and Thomas, so we should not simply assume the latter theory. Or are you claiming that you have another...

Re: reported: "Scholars Publish New Papyrus With Early Sayings of Jesus"
All you're saying is the similarities the MS has with the canonical texts allowed it to be identified as related to them But the reconstructed text is different from the canonical text The question of whether this MS is a syncretic blending of Thomas, Luke and Matthew or an earlier version of Luke ...

Re: reported: "Scholars Publish New Papyrus With Early Sayings of Jesus"
Peter Gurry has posted a (tentative) synopsis: http://evangelicaltextualcriticism.blogspot.com/2023/09/synopsis-of-poxy-5575-matt-luke-and.html And he questioned the influence of Luke. If the editors of the fragment are correct in identifying 'he died' in the first line of the fragment as coming fr...

Re: A Play with Mirrors: The Parable of the Sower
A brief note here because I don't have time to write a long one: I think I am in general agreement with Kungunde Kreuzerin's approach (and lsayre's comment) and will be interested to see how this thread progresses. I read Richard Bauckham on pseudonymity in the epistles some time ago where he argued...

Re: reported: "Scholars Publish New Papyrus With Early Sayings of Jesus"
Thanks for clarifying the point, Kunigunde. I had (more than) suspected your earlier comment was meant sarcastically: No, I think the reconstruction of these last lines is remarkable. Well, you can assume ζητεῖτε and then search, but it's not that clear either. I wouldn't have guessed that the firs...

Re: reported: "Scholars Publish New Papyrus With Early Sayings of Jesus"
Yep there's nothing here to support this 'syncretic' idea concerning this MS It seems to me that exactly the opposite is the case. This manuscript consists of very few complete words and otherwise parts of words and damaged letters. Someone must have had the idea that it could be a Christian text w...

Re: πίστις Χριστοῦ (faith of Christ) survey question
Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but imho it is unprofessional for the Journal for the Study of the New Testament to allow the second of these two paragraphs Paul's πίστις Χριστοῦ: [First paragraph snipped] Within the somewhat self-contained steam room of Anglophone Protestant exegesis, advocates ...

Re: reported: "Scholars Publish New Papyrus With Early Sayings of Jesus"
So what do we have? This is a summary and syncretization of Matthew and Luke's stories, with a relevant interpolation by whoever did the summary and syncretization. Later on, Gospel of Thomas evidently uses it as a source. It can't have gone the other direction, from Thomas to this syncretization. ...

Re: reported: "Scholars Publish New Papyrus With Early Sayings of Jesus"
I had sort of intended to let this one go because I have my hands full with other things at the moment and don’t really have the time (and maybe not the patience) to get into a long discussion of P. Oxy. 5575. But Mark Goodacre pointed out to me how striking the word ἀπέ]θ̣ανε, ‘he died’, is. It’s n...

Re: reported: "Scholars Publish New Papyrus With Early Sayings of Jesus"
Here's how Fish, Wallace and Holmes reconstruct it: P. Oxy. 5575- Sayings of Jesus - Fish-Wallace-Holmes 2023.png And they translate it: ‘. . . he died (?). you: [do not] worry [about your life,] what you will eat, [or] about your body, what [you will wear.] For I tell you: [unless] you fast [from t...
