I don't know what translations you are using but most translators consider it a future tense verse. Hultgren notes some here (footnote 45 on pages 100-101) and I've seen two or three others I don't recall offhand. The participle הבא is probably to be taken as a past tense (the Interpreter of the La...

The context is not important in a "pesher". This is very clear in the Qumran writings that you keep mentioning. The Chaldeans in Habakuk become the Kittim (Romans) in the Habakkuk pesher for example. They do not care about the context since it is a matter of reinterpreting the scriptures ...

So no, when Paul makes a pesher of Hosea, he does it very specifically and respect what the texts says. Hosea says that God will raise the bodies of the dead on the 3rd day. Jesus rises on the 3rd day. That is very specific. Not loosely. But Hosea uses the imagery of being raised up in the context ...

1 Peter seems genuine to me This is such a minority view that I was suprised that you are no Christian. Do you think that Peter was a fisherman from Galilee during his life? 1 Peter doesn't say what Peter did for a living but I suppose he must have had some kind of job before following Jesus, and s...

But Paul "loosely" used Hos. 6:2 for the "third day" part of the equation (which is one third of the equation, in fact) He don't use Hos 6:2 "loosely". Hosea 6:2 is a verse that announces that it is after 3 days that God raises the dead. Not having the information in I...

Re: Why I think a historical Jesus is best explanation for earliest texts

To me, nothing sums up Christianity and shows its similarity to the Fourth Philosophy better than Mt. 23:9-10. And do not call anyone on earth your father , for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Christ . This is what the Fou...

My original point was not that the followers of the Teacher of Righteousness randomly mixed OT verses to make pesharim, but that they clumsily or loosely used OT verses to try to interpret the Teacher's life after the fact ... This is quite different from what Paul does, since he does not choose va...

But does Paul derive all these details from the Suffering Servant passages? By my reading, Paul doesn't say that Jesus was buried "according to the scriptures," only that he "died for our sins" and "was raised on the third day." The burial also comes from the scripture...

So Paul and the DSS sect appear to have played equally fast and loose with the OT in order to support their points of view. Not when Paul uses scripture to give details of the life of Jesus. That's what we're talking about, right? 1 Corinthians 15 3 Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptu...

Although the comparison is interesting and relevant at first glance, I am not convinced that the two cases are so similar. The life of the teacher of righteousness in the manuscripts is loosely based on the scriptures when we read the pesharim. But unlike Paul, it is evident that the members of the...
