Re: A Simple Experiment With Paul

One thing that I am noticing is that the urpaul material I am finding is very short in content. Looks like a Twitter tweet, which is really what letters in the ancient world were like. Short and to the point. I think I have discovered urPaul's first letter. 2. PAUL TO SENECA, greeting I received yo...

Re: Dependence of birth in Luke and Matthew on "VoI"

However the direction of dependence is a thorny problem and IMO cannot be determined one way or another without further evidence being introduced . At least you get something half-right for a change Thanks Mac. I half appreciate the half compliment. ie. yes, the direction of dependence is a thorny ...

Re: Did Marcionism Feature in the Heretical Disputes of the Fourth Century?

If anyone knows of an online English translation in full of the "Panarion" please link to it. Many thanks. The link below is for Book 1 of Epiphanius's Panarion, which has Chapter 42, his chapter on Marcion: https://web.archive.org/web/20170916133936/http://www.masseiana.org/panarion_bk1....

Re: Dependence of birth in Luke and Matthew on "VoI"

And actually I would add to this the introduction of John as well. /// So really, we can see that all three Gospels, Matthew, Luke, and John, appear to describe the origin of Jesus in ways that derive from the Vision of Isaiah. Can it really be that Vision of Isaiah is late, and that this writer wa...

Re: Vision of Isaiah as source of the mystery

Good questions, but sure AoI has more in common linguistically with the DSS than NHL. Is there any scholarship on this? (I'm skeptical) But I certainly would like to learn more about the dating of AoI. AFAIK the early dating of the AoI was originally reliant upon identifying it to be what biblical ...

Re: Did Marcionism Feature in the Heretical Disputes of the Fourth Century?

This article mentions a number of 4th and 5th century sources on Marcionism however Arianism is not mentioned. The 'Rise and Fall' of Marcionism Eventually, the orthodox variant of Christianity became the state religion of the Roman empire in the fourth century. When we combine all the mentioned dis...

Re: Vision of Isaiah as source of the mystery

From another thread: ... though of course VoI is surely Jewish in origin. This is an essential point of contention. Why do you (and many others) believe it is Jewish? And why the surety in this belief? Do you also think that the tracts in the NHL which mention the various ascents and descents of the...

Re: Did Marcionism Feature in the Heretical Disputes of the Fourth Century?

The previous accounts notwithstanding - to show other pre-Nicene doctrines such as Valentinianism, at least, were invoked in doctrinal disputes - Did Marcionism Feature in the Heretical Disputes of the Fourth Century? I can't find any references to it being involved If it's anywhere it would have t...

The imperial labyrinth of Christian origins

No, no, no, no : the Latins pumped out Greek NT/LXX Bible codices for Constantine and Constantius i n the names of Esuebius and Athanasius Stop misrepresenting yourself !!! The manuscript Labyrinth of the Greek and Latin F-Fathers

Though you may be forgiven for being thrown off by the Black Hole of the Darke Ages sweet-Pete advertly threw in there: it is reasonable to suspect that the 2nd/3rd century sources such as Justin (and Tertullian and Irenaeus and the FF) were fabricated by the later 4th century church industry or by...
