Re: The case for Post First War Paul?

Andrew Criddle wrote above, in part: Clement of Rome provides evidence of knowledge of Paul's letters c 100 CE. (I'm not sure whether you accept the traditional dating of this work.) neilgodfrey replied, perhaps inappropriately presuming(?) [what Andrew "must" think--"naively" !?...

SBL abstracts; Qumran covenant renewal

a) Society of Biblical Literature 2021 Annual Meeting abstracts are available [link corrected]: https://www.sbl-site.org/meetings/Congresses_Abstracts.aspx?MeetingId=39 Though hearing the papers (in San Antonio or online) requires pay, these are free, and if like me you don’t want to read all of the...

Re: Paul --- A Criminal and a Liar

neilgodfrey wrote ad hominem posts while pretending to be against ad hominem posts. Pretentious and hypocritical?

Re: The Identity of Celsus and His "Jew"

Though I proposed in a 2007 article* that Celsus (the one that Origen responded to) and Lucian and Galen may have known one another, I also find Andrew’s posts quite informative and helpful.

Re: Paul --- A Criminal and a Liar

Though I did not agree with everything scholar Gerd Lüdemann wrote, he was quite learned on, among other subjects, Paul. More learned on Paul than I am, for sure. Earlier this year, he died. Perhaps another reminder to try to use our limited time wisely.

Re: Paul --- A Criminal and a Liar

I mentioned previously a book that, imo, gives good reasons to conclude that Paul was historical. It is by Gerd Luedemann, Opposition to Paul in Jewish Christianity (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1989; a revised English translation of his vol. 2 of his German trilogy on Paul). It includes history of ...

Re: Paul --- A Criminal and a Liar

Buddhist teachers I have met and meditated with, including Mahayana and Vajrayana ones, have been less officious. But what do I know?

mh, still not addressing the comparative complexity of the two options. Occam's razor.

Re: Paul --- A Criminal and a Liar

I did offer one argument, again: “There was, mh, one argument in there—that it is much easier to accept a human Paul that what complex conspiracy it would have taken to have faked him convincingly to so many ancient (and later) people.” So far, mary and neil…did not address that. Did not even acknow...

Re: Paul --- A Criminal and a Liar

There was, mh, one argument in there—that it is much easier to accept a human Paul that what complex conspiracy it would have taken to have faked him convincingly to so many ancient (and later) people. It is not very important, I freely admit, that “Santa Clause” is usually spelled Santa Claus. No b...
