Re: Questions about Dating 1 Clement

One should note that Joseph Turmel's claim that Hermas was the brother of Pope Pius is mainly based on the Muratorian canon list. IF the modern scholars who date this list c 300 CE (rather than c 200 CE) are correct then its value as historical evidence for the authorship of Hermas would be much red...

Re: Questions about Dating 1 Clement

If one accepts the evidence in Eusebius from Hegesippus and Dionysius of Corinth then c 170 CE Clement to the Corinthians was already regarded as an ancient and valued text. This would seem to require a date well before 150 CE.

Re: Why did the Gnostics use Paul and Gospels?

Gnostics were "weirdos" who interpreted the religious and philosophical writings of their time in "weird" ways. Why did they bother to do that? Because they were weird . As opposed to Nicene Christianity? weird . is a value judgment. But the exegesis is different. The orthodox t...

Re: Alexandria-Relevant 1st C AD Timeline

I like the ideas and timeline, but aren't you taking Acts at facevalue? I have never considered 'Acts.' Should I? Forgive me (I know I'm on a Bible forum), but my own interest here is (mostly) 'Jewish' and 200 BC-150 AD: Alexandrian Judaism, Judeo-Egyptian culture, Jewish Gnosticism (pre-115 AD), t...

Re: The case for Post First War Paul?

........................ Sceptical inquiry is not about pushing evidence to vanishing points to suit our agendas, though the term is sometimes used as if that is what is meant by it. If you see evidence in 1 Clement for a broader impact of Paul's activity within the parameters conventional wisdom a...

Re: Why did the Gnostics use Paul and Gospels?

Marcion Valentinus et al were seeking to reinterpret the existing Christian message, not proclaim an entirely new one. (Some Sethian groups may have been much less in dialogue with preexisting Christianity but that is another matter.) Andrew Criddle My contention is that orthodox Christianity didn'...

Re: Dogs remain dogs (in Mark)

........................... Right. So the meagre 6 verses that John the Baptist gets in Mark, the sum total of his entire ministry, this ministry of this Prophet Of Most High, the only Prophet ever to not only accurately predict the messiah, yet also to be alive when said messiah finally did show u...

Re: Why did the Gnostics use Paul and Gospels?

It seems that even Marcion's Gospel and Marcion's version of the Pauline letters still deal with the Jewish scriptures and still present a Jesus who is at least tangentially tied to Judaism. Given the teachings of the Gnostics, why did they deal with these materials at all? How did the canon that M...

Re: The case for Post First War Paul?

<SNIP> I think the strongest reason for beginning with a second century provenance for the letters is Lemche's point about "scientific dating". If they were from the mid-first century we seem to have no evidence of any impact they -- or Paul himself -- made at that time, and hence no obvi...
