Re: Potamius of Lisbon references the heavenly witnesses in writing to Athanasius

On reflection I still don't think that the passage in the Letter to Athanasius is a reference to the three heavenly witnesses passage. However I now think it likely that the passages in On the Substance of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. are allusions to the three heavenly witnesses pass...

Re: Seven Veils (Garments of Shame)

...One critic of "Secret Mark" noted that before its "discovery," Morton Smith had claimed that Clement of Alexandria taught lying for the faith, but that Morton Smith had come down on the wrong side of the debate and that Smith was misinterpreting Clement of A. on the topic. Wh...

This may be a trinitarian interpretation of 1 John 5:8
...the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and these three are one.

Re: Dating Paul's letters

Historical inquiry begins with testing the reliability of sources. If Marcion did not have that key passage in his version of Galatians then we would expect Tertullian -- who elsewhere seems never to fail to castigate Marcion for chopping out passages he does not like -- to make hay of that omissio...

Re: When did Israel become strictly monotheist?

The Elephantine consort of Yahweh is the Goddess Anat. The exact relation of Elephantine Anat to Asherah is unclear.

Re: Birth of the "Judean way of life"

IIUC there is a potential ambiguity in the Biblical texts. They could be understood as forbidding water creatures without fins AND scales (the standard interpretation) or those without fins OR scales. It is possible that the texts were originally understood to forbid those without fins OR scales e.g...

USA religious decline exaggerated

https://cps.isr.umich.edu/news/religion ... revisited/ A bizarre technical issue caused the real and substantial decline in religion in the US in this century to be seriously exaggerated.

Re: Synopsis of Schweitzer’s QHJ [Ch. 6, Hase & Schleiermacher]

Schweitzer’s antipathy to Schleiermacher is evident, and his criticism is not entirely fair or consistent. If S delivered the first lectures in Germany on the HJ, if he made all these judgments about the HJ, how can it also be true that he had no interest in empirical or historical reality? I think...
