Re: The Epistle to Diognetus and the Marcionite Nexus: Twin Visions of God's Kindness

Does this reference from Origen, also mentioning the Preaching of Peter, suggest that the internal Christian issue was with what Heracleon wrote about the Preaching of Peter, being referenced both by Clement and Origen? Quite possibly, but not exclusively. The quoted passage from Origen continues :...

Re: The Epistle to Diognetus and the Marcionite Nexus: Twin Visions of God's Kindness

Here we find a doctrine that sounds very similar to what puzzled the church fathers so much about the Marcionites, i.e., that man did not have any knowledge of God before He came. I will at once declare this to be the most interesting feature of the Epistle .. This is not to say that I am sure that...

Re: The "Christianos Graffito" discovered in Pompeii (1862)

What can be seen by the definitions in the LSJ and in this definition of the comment on Homer is that χρίω ("smear") is a wide-ranging verb that implies less than a more-specific sense of anointing: you can "rub" or "smear" clothing or arrows with poison, you can smear...

Re: κολοβοδάκτυλος

I was simply pointing out that if Stephan's understanding of κολοβοδακτυλος is accepted, other interpretations of the passage are possible, perhaps more plausible than the one he would like it to bear. Still think it's a brilliant spot :D

Re: κολοβοδάκτυλος

I can't believe that no one has suggested this before. This is a brilliant spot, and it's disappointing that hardly anyone (so far) has bothered to read this post. However, even if correct, this reading is not necessarily evidence of knowledge of two versions of the gospel of Mark, which I assume t...

Re: A "Messianic" Use of Chrestos in Against Celsus

Another possible explanation for why Jesus was called "Chrestos":

Re: The Epistle to Diognetus and the Marcionite Nexus: Twin Visions of God's Kindness

Many thanks to Peter : I offer a brief note on the Epistle to Diognetus, and within twelve hours thete's a full, reasoned and immensely suggestive essay in response. Total respect ! There is a further link to the 'Marcionite nexus' which is obscured by the text of 7.4 as conventionally printed and t...

Re: The X-Files: Chrēstos / Christos / Χρειστος

[quote Based on the context, this most likely abbreviates the word Χριστος. [/quote] This argument, inference from context, can be applied to that oddity, the Epistle to Diognetus. A mini-Apology to a pagan, while it mentions Christians (however spelt*), the saviour/revelator is not named. He is God...

Re: The Chreestology of Ephesians

Peter, many thanks for taking up my suggestion on a related thread that the 'inclusive' method of interpreting the Χριστος/Χρηστος data, pioneered by John Moles, was worth considering; and especially for doing the hard yards to provide generous excerpts from his essay. There's another example (minor...

Re: we shall be called with-Chrēstoi and Chrēstians in X

FWIW, Lampe's Patristic Greek Lexicon (1961 ed.) has an entry on συνχρηστος/συγχρηστος, referencing this letter as its only instance. The non-preferred suggestions clearly derive from the discussion in the H.I. Bell volume quoted by LC above. So : "2. ? for συγχρηστιανοι fellow Christian, ib.17...
