Re: *Ev precedes Mark because Mark knew the Apostolikon

Tertullian is just speculating. Another case, the miracle of loaves and fishes. In Mark the miracle of loaves and fishes is very well thought out and is clearly based on the miracle of Elisha. In *Ev and Luke there is only one feeding and it doesn't have the symbolism that it does in Mark. *Ev 10[. ...

Re: Bob Price, David Trobisch, RG Price and Roger Parvus's view about *Ev

There are many reasons to conclude that Marcion's scriptures weren't the earliest and that the scriptures used by Marcion weren't created by him. And there are no reasonable proposals for how you get from *Ev to Mark. It means someone would had to have removed a lot of material from *Ev, and all of ...

Re: *Ev precedes Mark because Mark knew the Apostolikon

Take for example the stilling of the storm. From BeDuhn's *Ev: 22Now it happened . . . [that he and his pupils boarded a boat. . . .] 23[And] as they were sailing he fell asleep. [And a violent storm descended. . . .] 24[. . . They woke him. . . .] But he, having been awoken, rebuked the wind and th...

Re: Does ransom theory indicate Jesus was heavenly?

One frequently co-occuring component of the ransom myth is that the Son of God was killed without awareness of his true identity, which does fit quite nicely into the idea of appearing as a man among men. I'd have to see examples. From what I've seen all such cases are from theologians working from...

Re: Excerpts from Volkmar, 'The Religion of Jesus,' 1857

Firstly, thanks for this MMS. I'm still working through this. Secondly, as for Paul "being a Jew", I'm not so sure. It is very interesting that Paul talks about seeking to destroy the "assembly of God" as a credential of his Jewish identity. Galatians 1: 13 For you have heard of ...

Does ransom theory indicate Jesus was heavenly?

We've discussed the ransom theory of salvation here several times, including: https://earlywritings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11623&start=10 https://earlywritings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=169771#p169771 This view, which was held by several church fathers, and is well supported by the scriptures...

Re: *Ev precedes Mark because Mark knew the Apostolikon

The proof is the following: FACT: Mark knew the pauline epistles FACT: before Marcion, none knew the epistles of Paul (apart the teacher of Marcion: Cerdon). FACT: Marcion made the epistles known in the same moment he made *Ev known. CONCLUSION: therefore Mark could know the epistles only after the...

Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

If Mark were retouched that much, im wondering why Joseph is completely absent from the story. Yeah, I think that's the difficulty, is trying to understand or explain the entire editorial framework. Why would an editor do X but not Y? And this issue has caused many people to assume that because a s...

Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

I have no doubt that Mark was revised in the presence of Matthew, so yes, parts of Mark were written after Matthew and conformed to Matthew. The real problem here is that people keep thinking of these as actually independent works that are purely preserved in their original form. NOTHING in the New ...

Re: Reconstructing the original story of Paul

There is one aporia in the proposal, above. That is, it looks like here Paul is talking about one trip to Jerusalem---but It says he met only Peter and James. Then he says Peter James and John gave him the right hand of fellowship. But that aporia is in the source text--it is even in the Canonical ...
