Re: Envisioning the beginnings of Jesus worship
I think that some of the works of the NT are fiction. Most specifically, the Gospel of Mark is an entirely invented allegorical fiction. I think there was an underlying Acts of the Apostle, which was about Paul's ministry. This may have been "based on a true story". There is an original l...

Re: Envisioning the beginnings of Jesus worship
Another only somewhat interesting thing has struck me. Philemon:23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, 24 and so do Mark , Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke , my coworkers. It seems to me that the Gospels of Mark and Luke (the original version of Luke, not canonical Luke...

Re: Paul Needed to be a Persecutor
I read an argument somewhere recently - not here - in a 'learned or even scholarly commentary iirc - that Paul would have been persecuting Jews, not Christians. Sorry, I can't recall where. Yes, but it gets complicated on how you define things. Some would argue that "Christians" were &quo...

Re: Envisioning the beginnings of Jesus worship
The general tenor of this your post seems to point out that Paul was really the 'founder' of Christianity. What do you think about the Pillars preceding Paul? Did they hallucinate already a Jesus? I think they were working from allegorical readings of the scriptures according to the teachings of so...

Envisioning the beginnings of Jesus worship
I apologize for having created a few rambling threads recently, but I'm trying to think through the beginnings of Paul's ministry and origins of Jesus worship. I begin actually with a passage from 1 Maccabees 1: 11 In those days certain renegades came out from Israel and misled many, saying, “Let us...

Re: Marcionite readings of the Christ Hymn?
Out of concerns for respecting fair use, I didn't reproduce all of Vinzent's statistical data in the footnotes, but he meticulously accounts how the terminology in Phil 2.6-8 is wholly consistent with well-attested vocabulary elsewhere in Apostolos, and that several lexical features in Phil 2.9-11 ...

Re: Paul Needed to be a Persecutor
I agree with much of this. I think I finally wrapped my head around what's going on with Paul. I think the "assembly of God" that Paul addresses and talks about persecuting was a pro-Roman faction of Judaism. Interestingly Paul never talks about "Romans", instead he uses the term...

But what is the basis for not including those verses?

Re: Interpreting Galatians 1:13-17 (3 possible readings)
Ok, rethinking this even more in a way that makes Galatians 1 make sense, and possibly sheds significant light on the origins of Jesus worship. 13 For you have heard of my former way of life in Judaism, how I used to persecute the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it; 14 and I was ad...
