Re: Dave Allen: an analysis

Can someone list other instances where a copyist changes the tone of a passage in order to suit his ideology: e.g. reading a negative portrayal of a figure whom the copyist adores and changing it to an adoring portrait, or reading a positive portrayal of a figure the copyist loathes and changing it ...

Re: Turmel: Jesus undertook to do in Palestine what, fifteen centuries later, Joan of Arc did in France

Here Turmel, so embedded in the traditions of Christian interpretation, believes, like his peers and so admirably expressed more recently by James McGrath, that he can reach through beneath the stories and pull out the artifacts of ancient events that have long lain hidden beneath those stories. Thi...

Re: Dave Allen arguing for a genuine Testimonium Flavianum: a criticism

What would make the TF relevant to the question of the historicity of Jesus? I'm of that school of historical methods as exemplified by the great classicist and historian of ancient times, Moses I. Finley. Historians today, at least when doing serious work, most of them no doubt, no longer read sour...

Re: Dave Allen arguing for a genuine Testimonium Flavianum: a criticism

Giuseppe, Joseph is a later tradition not known by Paul or Mark. Robert M Price thinks the title “messiah Ben Joseph” got mashed in as his father. In 2005 David Mitchell published in Review of Rabbinic Judaism an article setting out the evidence allowing for, even inviting, the possibility that the...

Re: Dave Allen arguing for a genuine Testimonium Flavianum: a criticism

. . . . In fact for everything I like the questions mythicists ask. All the best Dave. Even when they attempt to draw attention to the arguments of non-mythicist scholarship that call for a re-reading of the evidence that has been used as the basis for the view that popular messianic movements were...

Re: Questions about Dating 1 Clement

Furthermore, the overwhelmingly Christian biases (in past scholarship even if not in present confession) of the reputable scholarship about these matters would seem to encourage earliest dating as most favoured. Speaking of establishing early dates . . . When we heard that Trump, twenty years after...

Re: Questions about Dating 1 Clement

There would be something strange going on or not going on if any of Tumel's arguments from over a century ago have not been subject to revision. The bigger question is how we read and assess the information contained in our sources. Nothing should be taken at face value. That's a truism that applies...

Re: Why did the Gnostics use Paul and Gospels?

I think it is likely that the earliest gentiles to become proto-NT "Christians" had converted to Judean ways, circumcision and all. They had wanted to be a part of the action in this new age. You say you think it "likely", but is there evidence to support the view that it was su...

Re: Lack of Divine Foresight

Not only lack of foresight in the Garden of Eden, but his lack of basic knowledge there, too, as when he (god) is said to be wandering around looking for Adam and calling out "Where are you?" And throughout -- with Noah, with the tower of Babel, with Lot, with Abraham, with Moses, and the ...
