Agnostos Theos

I am beginning to think most 2nd Temple Hellenistic 'Jews' (nebulous identity) were monolatrous, even in the 1st C. AD, and a binitarian formulation was already well-established by Philo Judaeus' day, c. 25 AD, perhaps 2-3 generations earlier. I am translating Eduard Norden's Agnostos Theos (1913) r...

Agatho Daimon = Egyptian God Kneph

WORK IN PROGRESS -- I'm using this as a workbook page, sorry. Many edits to come... The association of Enoch (pre-400 BC) with Hermes-Thoth (c.300 BC) probably dates fairly early, 330-250 BC. He is often wrong on dates, but see this otherwise excellent Christian Bull 2018 essay ; he gets right to th...

Eupolemus in 158 BC: Enoch is the Father of (Egyptian) Astrology (c.300 BC)

WORK IN PROGRESS -- I'm using this as a workbook page, sorry. Many edits to come... Link : In his 1974 work, “Eupolemus: A Study of Judaeo-Greek Literature,” pages 4-7, Ben Zion Wacholder showed that the Jewish ambassador Eupolemus was almost certainly the Eupolemus who wrote a Greek-language histor...

The Enoch Myth

Treasure trove of Enoch material, here. Key References to The Pseudepigraphical Book of Enoch : Link (Caveat, I haven't checked and confirmed it all yet. Still, it gathers a great number of informative sources.) Many of the Sumerian myths suggest Sippar (Iraq) as the distant origin : https://upload....

Re: 'God' as Varied Jewish Deities

Julian, Contra Galilaeos , 363 AD Next to consider the views that are correctly held by the Jews, and also those that our fathers handed down to us from the beginning. Our account has in it the immediate creator of this cosmos , as the following shows ...................... 9 Moses indeed has said n...

The Poimandres Mystery, indeed

Dear Prof. Pearson doesn't know what he (re)discovered, way back in 1972/3, tho. How do we account for the curious mixture of Jewish piety, Gnosticism, and Hermetic paganism found here in the [Hermetic tractate] Poimandres ? Is it possible to reconstruct the religious history of this text? To be sur...

Re: The Hermetic-influenced John, in Alexandria?

On the Alexandrian thesis for John, see LINK to John J. Gunther, “The Alexandrian Gospel and Letters of John” in The Catholic Biblical Quarterly Vol. 41, No. 4 (October, 1979), pp. 581-603: The Alexandrian origin of John gains further support from the pro-Egyptian Hermetic literature. The syncretist...

Re: The Revelation of the Mystery

There are 4 Pauline passages that must be read together, since they reflect the same Marcionite/Gnostic ideas in almost identical language. Paul predates Marcion by close to 100 yrs. Marcion was a librarian, a book collector (and had many scribes working for him), but he is not the originator of Gn...

Re: Embarrassing!

Why assume that? Jesus as magic-user trained in Egypt is inferior from a Christian religious perspective to Jesus as YHWH's appointed Son/Prophet/Avatar/Messiah, surely. Apollos is identified as Alexandrian, and Basilides + Valentinus + etc. are typically identified that way, also. One imagines it ...
