Re: Paul was wealthy
While trying to document my idea that the buying power of a silver coin was relative to the silver content of the denarius at any one time, I ran into the problem that many surviving price equations are stated in drachmas. However, I cannot find anything relating to the debasement of the silver cont...

Re: Paul was wealthy
In attempts to illustrate the inflation in prices that occurred in the 3rd century CE, everyone is busy making assertions about a denarius being able to buy so many pounds, quarts, pecks or bushels of wheat, but these equations are all very loose, not always being clear whether these are supposed to...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
At the end of the day, are we talking about fennel, hemp or a variety of rue? Bar Bahlul equates Aramaic שברא (Shin Bet Resh Alpha) with ארמלא (Aleph Resh Mem Lamed Aleph) או (or), בשושא (Bet Shin Vav Shin Aleph). Per Casey, the first of these is to be identified as Peganum harmala (Syrian Rue) a p...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
What part of Casey's 'does not survive in the Aramaic of our period' did you find unclear? http://www.tyndale.cam.ac.uk/Tyndale/staff/Williams/HeadandWilliamsQReview.pdf points out that Casey's equation of the Aramaic word with the herb in Luke is based on a simple misreading of a dictionary entry,...

Re: The name Metatron for Enoch in ascent texts
To veer off into another direction from the main theme here, if numbers held mystical significance (I understand they did) could the name have been derived with gematria in mind? The Greek word here, μετετέθη, I think amounts to 666. The Hebrew מטטרון to 314. Has there been any discussion along tho...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book
According to Casey the word is found in ancient Akkadian in late Aramaic and in Syriac. See Casey Aramaic Q If Casey is right about this (and I presume he is) then the word certainly existed in the time of Jesus. Andrew, What troubles me is that his Accadian etymology proves absolutely nothing! Are...

Re: The name Metatron for Enoch in ascent texts
Apparently, the article says that vowels are usually not represented in the Hebrew transliteration, but may be represented by a consonant or semi-vowel. Metatron, מטטרון מ Mem ט Tet ט Tet ר Resh ו Vav נ Nun μετὰ θρóνος μ מ Mem ε [omitted] τ ט Tet ὰ [omitted] θ ט Tet ρ ר Resh ó ו Vav ν נ Nun ος [decl...

Re: Faked source citations
Thank you for looking into this. Bushby's material seems clearly based upon this stuff; did he really rewrite it himself, do you suppose? I am puzzled by the guy. This isn't the first time I've crossed one of his "publications." He clearly was using the book of Oahspe as a source, but pre...

Re: Paul was wealthy
Jay, It is tricky to think in modern economic terms when dealing with ancient economies. Modern economies are much larger than those of city states, even when they were interconnected by trade. The word inflation is one of those modern terms. This is where Karl Marx (Capital, vol 1, 1867, vol 2, 189...
