Re: Rules of Historical Reasoning
Gday all, Not in the Pauline epistles (which repeatedly give a human father to Jesus with no mention of virgin birth) Like this ? "For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son" Or this ? "If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?
Gday all, Yes, even the good letters are sometimes a confused mish-mash of sections. The highlighted quote of yours is actually why I feel that Paul is actually an historical person. We look at, for instance, 2 Corinthians and can see at least five individual smaller letters and a possible later int...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?
Gday all, You might like to take a crack at rating: Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Papias of Hierapolis, John of Patmos the Revelator, Quadratus of Athens, Basilides, Valentinus, Hegesippus. Yup, I'll be looking into them, after some more reading and study - the more I rea...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?
Gday all, Wow, thanks MrMacSon - Allen's thesis is a tour-de-force with a firm conclusion as you said : The result of the investigation proves beyond reasonable doubt that no reliable extra-biblical/scriptural accounts exist to support the historical existence of, inter alia, Jesus of Nazareth, Jame...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?
Gday all,
Well, the first part, the Mishnah, was closed and collected around 200CE, but it contains two layers from :Bernard Muller wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2017 9:21 am BTW, the Talmud was written around 200 CE, a bit late to be know by Paul, or an impostor in the 2nd century CE.

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?
Gday all :) Well, this thread has headed off in an unexpected, but intriguing, direction. Looks like I have some reading to do about the pernicious problem of 'Paul', and Marcion the Mysterious. Thanks to all for their input :) Meanwhile, here is a better list after recent discussions : John the Bap...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?
There are no such thing as authentic Epistles of Paul. The earliest known Epistles were hand-written by person or persons no earlier than the mid 2nd-3rd century. It is simply absurd and mis-leading to suggest 2nd-3rd century writings are authentic 1st century Epistles. It is most bizarre that it i...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?
Gday Jax, As this thread is titled "Who existed ? When ? Where ?" I ask, aside from the narrative (completely dismissed by modern scholars) in Acts what makes you think that Paul, or as he calls himself, Paulos, was writing in the mid 1st century? At this point, I am entirely UNcertain abo...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?
Gday, to Kapyong, Being shown I was wrong by the smart guys is a gift of better knowledge, one of the rewards of coming here. Oh, the ones offering ill-evidenced possibilities are the smart guys. Where does that leave me: the idiot? Cordially, Bernard No Bernard, I'm sorry if that offended you. I ha...
