Re: The Josephan TF and it's 19 c.e. context.

Quoting the Greek of Josephus isn't against the rules and is not harassment or severe escalation of rhetoric. Context, Peter - it's the context in which the walls of Greek text are being used - against a poster who does not know Greek. Funny really - all this in a thread seeking to deal with contex...

Re: The Josephan TF and it's 19 c.e. context.

After all Greek words are only Greek words.....it's the use of words that can damage, that can intimidate, that can bully another. In this case, the Greek words were a quote from Josephus. Intent - that's an easy opt out - who can really read the motive of another. And worse... who would like to be ...

Re: The Josephan TF and it's 19 c.e. context.

Stephan Huller, you and I have a history from 14 years back to when you joined the FRDB forum. I have experience of how you operate towards my posts. As a moderator: It's understandable to have one's guard up around someone who has a history with you. In the context of considering whether posts are...

Re: The Josephan TF and it's 19 c.e. context.

How is this an insult? I am agreeing with you. It's one of Schwartz's arguments. The appearance of Jesus in Josephus. Read the article. How did this turn into a "threat"? I am providing evidence for your argument. :notworthy: Stephan Huller, you and I have a history from 14 years back to ...

Re: The Josephan TF and it's 19 c.e. context.

Herod the Tetrarch was supposed to have founded Tiberias in 17 CE. "AND NOW Herod the tetrarch, who was in great favor with Tiberius, built a city of the same name with him, and called it Tiberias." (Antiquities 18.2) There are 28 English sentences or this: Τελευτᾷ δὲ καὶ Φραάτης ὁ Παρθυα...

Re: The Josephan TF and it's 19 c.e. context.

The coins of the early Roman governors of Judaea are dated via years of Tiberius (no names of governors are on these coins). Tiberius ruled from 17 September 14 – 16 March 37. Josephus writes regarding Tiberius: For although he was Emperor twenty two years, he sent in all but two procurators to gove...

Re: Luke knew Josephus or Josephus knew Luke?

maryhelena, This may be a paraphrase of your words: "Methinks we need to put Josephus in the dock," which I have taken to mean that his assertions are not above question. Yet on the 19 CE business you write as if that is rock solid, fundamental, unquestionable. That's lovely, Stephen, tha...

Re: Luke knew Josephus or Josephus knew Luke?

From an earlier thread: Please show that the Testimonium Flavianum found in the manuscripts of Josephus Antiquities 18.63-64 is set in the context of 19 CE. All of the rest of your argument seems to be based on this premise. Can you cite any scholar who has published on the subject who has claimed ...

Re: Luke knew Josephus or Josephus knew Luke?

(1) Did Luke write after War and Antiquities or after War but before Antiquities? (2) Or--if one did influence the other--is there a third source involved? (3) Are chronology and geography not Luke's strong suits? (4)Though I don't have a hardened opinion on the TF, is it at least possible that Jos...
