Re: What are your working questions?
What are the arguments that John predates Mark? It's a good question but not really my point. My point is: what are the arguments that provide a date for Mark and a date for John? How reliable/realistic are they? Are they based on a consensus view where people simply agree on a date for convention,...

Re: What are your working questions?
(1) The various analyses around early texts is dependent on how they are dated. For example, if gJohn is dated earlier than gMark, then a lot of hypotheses would need to change. So how accurate are the dates that we have for the texts in say the first two centuries? Which ones have been 'locked in' ...

Re: What Are "These Things" in John 21:24?
Apologies if this is a tangent, but is there a theory for why the Beloved Disciple is not named in gJohn? He sounded like an important character so it is strange that he was never named. I'm guessing that the readers of that time knew who it was referring to.

Re: Modern Apocrypha
I don't know if this one fits the OP's requirement, but: "The Gospel according to Acharya S" by DM Murdock (2009). It's a collection of essays attacking organised religion, especially the Judeo-Christian God, and introducing her own ideas about the Life-force, "a wonderful mystery per...

Re: Why does Paul say that Jesus was "born of a woman"?
AFAIK, Marcion's Gospel doesn't actually say that Jesus came down from heaven, only that he descended to Capernaum, the same phrase we see in gLuke. Still more accurate to say that it's unclear and has been a matter of dispute: <snipped> Part of this scholarly dispute: Less clear is whether „de cae...

And you still seem to be assuming that the gospel used by Marcion didn't say that Jesus came down from heaven. AFAIK, Marcion's Gospel doesn't actually say that Jesus came down from heaven, only that he descended to Capernaum, the same phrase we see in gLuke. Unfortunately it's more accurate to say...

bad signals on marcionite beliefs or they are giving us bad signals on marcion’s scriptures. Re: Why does Paul say that Jesus was "born of a woman"?
... I would like to make the point that it would be a mistake to read 'woman' in Pauline philosophy as a literal woman of flesh and blood. (and therefore conclude the Pauline writer is supporting a flesh and blood gospel Jesus). I wouldn't say it is a 'mistake', rather it is the natural reading. &q...

Re: Why does Paul say that Jesus was "born of a woman"?
Gal 4:4 is part of a chiasmic structure, showing that Christians are heirs of God rather than servants. Christ is a naturally born son via a woman, while Christians are sons via adoption. I've colored the various pairs within the chiasm differently to highlight this: 4:1 Now I say, That the heir, as...

Re: A new book for the Jesus historicists.
A new book arriving later this year (autumn). Looks like Richard Carrier will have his work cut out in reviewing this book. Contributors by the bucket load. By all accounts this new generation of scholars are stated as continuing the quest for the historical Jesus - necessary of course because the ...
