Re: Gospels as "euhemerized" stories about Jesus?

I've extracted parts from Richard Carrier's OHJ dealing with euhemerization and the Gospels below, with the page numbers showing the location. There are more passages dealing with those topics, but I've only extracted those parts that I think are most pertinent. I've added my own comments in some se...

Re: Gospels as "euhemerized" stories about Jesus?

The fact we have Paul writing within a few decades of perceived events, and claiming there were already other teachers and scripture, throws a monkey wrench in their laughable hypothesis that cannot be removed. It's still a possibility though. Carrier has brought up the example of the UFO crashing ...

Re: Gospels as "euhemerized" stories about Jesus?

And Crook is wrong/confused about "that Jesus was a historical figure who was euhemerized, that's turned into a god later." He's describing apotheosis. If that's what he understood euhemerization to mean at the time of the debate, then this criticism of Carrier's theory is based on incorr...

Re: Gospels as "euhemerized" stories about Jesus?

Exposing errors in the historicist arguments is one thing - something else entirely to establish credibility for the Carrier/Doherty mythicist theory...It seems to me that while OHJ will do the job of casting doubt on the historicity of Jesus - it will fail to establish credibility for the Carrier/...

Re: Gospels as "euhemerized" stories about Jesus?

Does anyone know if Doherty ever used euhemerism to support his mythicist theory? As far as I know, Doherty doesn't use the concept at all in support of his mythicist theory. But you can understand why: as Zeba Crook said in his debate with Richard Carrier, the idea that in ancient times there was ...

Re: Gospels as "euhemerized" stories about Jesus?

I found the Youtube clip I was thinking of. It is Richard Carrier's debate with Zeba Crook on whether there was a historical or a mythical Jesus, called "Jesus of Nazareth: Man or myth?" Crook is a professor of religious studies, and an atheist. He proposes that the evidence suggests that ...

Re: Gospels as "euhemerized" stories about Jesus?

Note that Euhemerus was considered as an atheist. From Wiki (my bolding): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euhemerism ... Though his work is lost, the reputation of Euhemerus was that he believed that much of Greek mythology could be interpreted as natural or historical events subsequently given supern...

Re: Did Jesus Die in Outer Space?

Thanks for the references, cienfuegos. Not sure I agree with you, but sounds like neither of us need to spend time on this at this time. Probably best as a separate thread if we want to continue at some time in the future on the timing topic.

Re: Gospels as "euhemerized" stories about Jesus?

It seems the wikipedia entry was very misleading (since edited), and, more referred to Apotheosis add/elaboration - Euhemerzation is the proposition that an apparently real biography was later invented for a previously mythical, especially divine, figure, from pre-existing narratives about such a f...

Re: Gospels as "euhemerized" stories about Jesus?

But as I understand it, "euhemerization" is the idea that the gods were originally mortal beings -- famous kings and heroes -- who were later thought to be gods. There are no miracles, no supernatural aspects to these euhemerized beings. So the Gospels don't appear to fit under the catego...
