Re: Does Galatians 4 imply a pre-70 AD perspective?
the commentary on Romans ends so early without specifically mentioning Marcion's text ended in chapter 14. Tertullian probably didn't even know that. Tertullian claimed Marcion's Romans was full of holes, but he never identified which passages were missing. So it is no surprise he never said Marcio...

Re: Does Galatians 4 imply a pre-70 AD perspective?
to Stephan, Clement of Alexandria quoted Romans 15:4 as written by "the apostle", 15:29 as written by "the apostle", 16:19 as written by "the apostle, in the epistle to the Romans", and part of the doxology as "the apostle writes in the Epistle to the Romans"....

Re: [Forgery] 2 Corinthians 11:32-33 [/Forgery]
Jay, The low walls are hollow, because of the windows! Besides, looking at the door on the right, the walls look to be around 8 to 9 ft tall, enough for the height of a floor. It looks to me the houses in them were built with what was left of a wall (on the opposite side of the picture) and the wall...

Re: Does Galatians 4 imply a pre-70 AD perspective?
Hi Stephan, Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery Why, if the audience are Galatians, why does Paul reference them being burdened AGAIN by a yoke of slavery? My assumption would be the audience were proselytes or those who were coming under the 'burden' J...

Re: Does Galatians 4 imply a pre-70 AD perspective?
Hi Stephan, But there is no evidence Tertullian ever met a Marcionite. All his evidence seems to come from second hand and third hand sources Maybe not, but Tertullian claimed to be working from Marcion's canon. That was all he needed for his chapters 4 & 5 of Against Marcion. Why do you think t...

Re: Does Galatians 4 imply a pre-70 AD perspective?
to Stephan, First of all, Tertullian is clearly using original arguments in Irenaeus so it is not as if two independent witnesses are being assembled. Irenaeus is saying this on his own authority and Tertullian is merely copying out - or 'copying' - what he is saying. We have a single person crying ...

Re: Does Galatians 4 imply a pre-70 AD perspective?
About Romans, Tertullian accused Marcion to have removed many whole passages from it (but never identified these passages). Going back to Schmid's comments on Ephrem's Romans (unfortunately, its first 4 chapters are in the black out zone), 8:12 to 10:1 And 10:5 to 11:32 are omitted (as also anything...

Re: Does Galatians 4 imply a pre-70 AD perspective?
Hello, all
Just noticed: according to Schmid's reports on Ephrem's Peshitta, that Peshitta, for Romans, ended at 14:23, with no doxology, exactly as reported by Origen for Marcion's version. And there are no other ancient known manuscripts where Romans is ended this way.
Cordially, Bernard

Re: Does Galatians 4 imply a pre-70 AD perspective?
What makes you think it was part of the Marcionite canon? I already explained that in a previous posting. As for Isaac, well, in 4:22, it is said that Abraham had two sons, so it is not much of a jump to name one of the son. More so, when Abraham had already been named. Why, if the audience are Gal...

Re: Does Galatians 4 imply a pre-70 AD perspective?
Tertullian wrote about the deletions involving Abraham and described very accurately the changes in 4:24-26, in his comments about Marcion's version of Galatians. On a previous post, I discussed the discontinuities (about seed and promise) generated by previous deleted passages in Ephrem's version, ...
