Re: Memory theory and HJ (re)construction

Where does your unfavorable view of Crook's article leave you regarding the Quest for the Historical Jesus? Do you have a historical methodology in mind, by which we can arrive at fairly secure conclusions about Jesus' teachings and life? I think we have to proceed on a case by case basis. I've bee...

Can you sum up his argument in the pay-wall part of the post, without violating any agreements?

Re: Memory theory and HJ (re)construction

Hello junego, I just finished reading the article you linked. I think it is a devastating critique of the Quest for the Historical Jesus. I recommend it highly. Crook does not deny that the gospels contain factual material. What he denies is that we can use them to distill that factual material, es...

Re: The Historicity of "Post Resurrection" Jesus

It's weird to say that over 500 people "at one time" came to a conclusion from their study of the scriptures. Perhaps a little odd. But not as weird as the other options. It would be weirder yet for 500 people to all have the very same hallucination or very same religious vision all “at o...

Re: The Most Important New Testament Passage

Thanks for resurrecting this post, robert. The Greek ophthe (passive aorist of horao ), commonly translated as "appeared" or “seen”, was also used in the sense of being in the presence of a revelation --- not necessarily a physical seeing, not necessarily a vision, but also to perceive, to...

Re: Memory theory and HJ (re)construction

Tim Widowfield is writing a series on the scholarly claims of social memory theory as applied to historical Jesus studies and is demonstrating how the whole shebang is based on a distorted understanding of the original theory as developed in sociology. His most recent post is devastating, demonstra...

Re: The Historicity of "Post Resurrection" Jesus

The root word translated a 'seen' here is ὁράω ' horaō ' which does not necessarily mean to 'see' with the eyes, but to 'perceive', 'to become acquainted with by experience', 'to look to', 'to pay heed to'; Acts 8:23 'perceive', Heb 2:8 'But now we see not yet all things put under him.' Heb 11:27 '...
