This blogger concludes that the fragment is a forgery because another fragment, also in Coptic, is from the same pen and seems to be cribbed from a known MS.:

Re: Ehrman's "How Jesus Became a God" is now out.
Thanks for trying to find out.
If Zias is right that Haas originally in the TV studio said that the bones belonged to "a somewhat aged individual," then maybe maryhelena's attempt to split the difference on Antigonus' age is the best one can do, i.e. maybe in his later forties...?

Re: Historical Jesus and Historical Tank Man: A Similitude?
I wrote Mark felt compelled to put the embarrassing stuff in his gospel for sake of giving it an air of authenticity. However, most of the time, "Mark" used a variety of ways to alleviate the negative impact (damage control) of these embarrassing items. Hello Bernard, it seems to me that ...

Re: Historical Jesus and Historical Tank Man: A Similitude?
Yes, as I said earlier, I too, like maryhelena, think there is a problem in the term HJ. It seems poorly defined to me. I'm reminded of what Sean Carroll said about theism in his recent debate with William Lane Craig: theism is poorly defined, so it does a bad job in helping to generate hypotheses f...

Re: Romans released bodies of the crucified?
Roger, can you provide the basis for your belief? If you're going on the same evidence as that which Monette cites, cool - or if you have other evidence in mind, it would be useful to know of it. Thanks.

Re: Historical Jesus and Historical Tank Man: A Similitude?
The Criterion of Embarrassment has been hard hit in recent years, for its methodology doesn't seem to avoid begging the question. Can you defend the CoE in general, before seeking to apply it to the ruckus in the Temple scene? To say that it can never be valid is a fallacy fallacy, though. Not exac...

Re: Historical Jesus and Historical Tank Man: A Similitude?
Despite all the conversations, I still have trouble with the phrase, "historical Jesus." So far, my understanding is that we mean, someone named Jesus, of whom at least one thing said in the portrayal of the gospel Jesus can be established as true -- or even, as likely -- by methods of his...

Romans released bodies of the crucified?
I had thought that the release of the body of Mattathias Antigonus II to Abba to bury, after Mattathias was crucified and beheaded, marked an exception to Roman practice. Greg Monette in a blog post earlier linked by maryhelena in her Bart Erhman thread (http://earlywritings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?...

Re: Ehrman's "How Jesus Became a God" is now out.
David, in your earlier, informative post you proposed that Antigonus II may have been around 30 in 40 BCE, which would make him about 33 at death. (That age at death - coincidence? I'm not sure whether you think the gospel stories use the death of Antigonus as one of their models.) Can you with some...
