Re: Codex Vaticanus of bible digitized

I haven't worked on this Ms., but I have worked on many other ones. It is not uncommon that when the job of copying was shared among two or more copyists, each would be given sheets of parchment on which to copy certain sections of the text. When one copyist reached the end of his section, there mig...

Re: Codex Vaticanus of bible digitized

I just looked at a few images. A good deal of Genesis is in a later Byzantine minuscule hand, maybe 14th cent. (?) from what I could see at a glance. I assume the original leaves at the beginning and end of the codex were lost.

Re: Egyptian historical fiction - any parallels?

I didn't know what scandal you meant; your google link is only to photos. I googled manassa's married name and got some reports of the situation, with comments. Sounds a mess - the sort of thing that has happened in other venues before. Will be interested in your views on antecedents of historical f...

Re: Dating gJohn & John 5:2

Taking Josephus at his word, that he was not unfamiliar with the prophets etc and had visions and could interpreted them - is he not here dealing with an abstract ideal rather than the geography of the region? Is not gJohn 5.2 dealing with abstract gospel ideas re Sheep's Gate, stirred water, mirac...

Re: Dating gJohn & John 5:2

City probably not an eruv! Or at least, the eruv issue may be of no value for establishing where the Bethesda Pool was located. A friend called my attention to this series by Lawrence Schiffman about "sectarian" views of the institution of eruv in the Second Temple period. http://lawrences...

Re: Dating gJohn & John 5:2

Hi KK, thanks for this very clear drawing. My problems with the St. Anne's pool/s are: 1. did the water undergo periodic movement as described in the story? I've come across only one claim that a spring fed that pool, and it was on an apologetical website. 2. wasn't that pool within the city walls i...

Re: Dating gJohn & John 5:2

Another point: both Masterman and Paton favor the Virgin's Ftn because in the first century it was outside the city walls. Therefore, it was not legal for the healed man to carry his pallet on the sabbath at that spot because he was not in the special sector inside the walls. I gather the circuit o...

Re: Abhr. Malherbe - Pauline writers in Hellenistic context

As I implied in the OP, 'paraenesis' is a term of art for a kind of moralizing exhortation, beloved of both philosophical and rhetorical authors. A good example is Isocrates' Ad Demonicum , c. 373 BCE (considered spurious by some but generally accepted as authentic). Earlier poetry, e.g. of Theognis...

Egyptian historical fiction - any parallels?

I hesitated over where to post this interesting review. I hope it's not too neglected in this Classical Texts subforum! Egyptian historical fiction - any parallels? Colleen Manassa, Egyptologist at Yale, has written a book on the genre of historical fiction in New Kingdom Egypt. I post the review fi...
