Judas' betrayal in the gospel of Marcion
The Gospel of Marcion, Section 6 (Adv.Marc.iv.40) 22: 1 Now the feast of unleavened bread was coming near, which is called the Passover. 2 And the chief priests and scribes were seeking how they might kill him; for they feared the people. 3 Then Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, being of the number...

Re: GMark's Stylish Balanced & Contrasting Irony as Evidence of Markan Priority
It is far more likely that the original story contained all of these patterns and references and that as others copied the story and made derivative works they degraded the patterns and references that were part of the original. You can't take a story written without all of this symbolism and hidde...

Re: The Messianic Secret
I think that some kind of historical Jesus is the best explanation for the earliest layer of texts, but I don't believe he was resurrected and ascended to heaven. So this isn't an argument over whether it happened or not, but rather what the earliest Christians believed. At first glance, this seems...

Re: The Messianic Secret
According to Acts, it wasn't Paul describing how wonderful Jesus was that caused people to believe, but rather how Jesus conformed to scriptures. Acts is not history = Jesus if he existed, was not resurrected and was not exalted in heaven. It is therefore impossible for Jesus' destiny to be conform...

Re: The Messianic Secret - each verse commented on
I also am curious and surely I reject any "explanation" that makes Marcion a Jew or son of proselites. In whiletime I note that the Gospel of Judas is anti-demiurgist despite of it being based also on midrash from Jewish scriptures. Which midrashim are you referring to in Judas? Midrashim...

Re: The Messianic Secret
Just to elucidate, could you briefly sketch this particular "tradition about Isaiah's servant" in for instance Pesher on Genesis ? I think that conceptually you may have a point in some of the cases that you mention, but that at a lower level we will find great discrepancies Sure. 4Q252 T...

Re: The Messianic Secret
Is that because, if there were a historical Jesus, he wouldn't be associated with Isaiah's servant? Not, it would make sense for a would-be Messiah to be associated with the servant to demonstrate that he was the Messiah since the servant of Isaiah was the typical messianic figure during Second Tem...

Re: The Messianic Secret
The entire historical problem of that is that there was no such tradition at all at that time - most certainly not in the form that it was Judaised into around 2-300 CE There was a tradition about Isaiah's servant in these texts : - 1 QIsa - Pesher on Genesis - Pesher on Isaiah - 4Q285 - 11Q13 - Se...
