Re: The Messianic Secret
Since oral tradition cannot be traced back to a historical Jesus, their only available source on the physical appearance of Jesus is Isaiah 53. The problem is that Paul proceeds in the same way and his source for the death and resurrection of Jesus is exactly the same as that of Tertullian, Justin ...

Re: The Messianic Secret
This is just another allusion to the servant of Isaiah. It's not "just" another allusion to the servant of Isaiah, it is yet another allusion to the servant of Isaiah. Some mythicists might argue that, if Jesus was historical, then there is no need to refer to the Old Testament for a desc...

Re: The Messianic Secret
I think there is evidence for it. Besides the letters of Paul, we also have 1 Clement: For Christ is of those who are humble-minded , and not of those who exalt themselves over His flock. Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Sceptre of the majesty of God, did not come in the pomp of pride or arrogance, altho...

Re: Carrier, 1 Clement and the gospels
Given that the 1 Clement author writes " Remember the words of our Lord Jesus Christ , how He said... ", it sounds like something that is already known to the Corinthians so not being made up by the author. It doesn't appear to be from any of Paul's letters, so it's from an independent so...

Re: Carrier, 1 Clement and the gospels
Given that : - Paul uses pseudo mystical revelations to compose his few Jesus teachings - Mark uses Paul's teachings to put them into Jesus' mouth - Matthew uses the teachings of the epistle of James to put them into Jesus’ mouth I guess we are dealing here with a dependence of Mark, Luke and Matthe...

Re: Taking seriously Marcionite origins of the Pauline letters
But the fact that it was Marcion that came into the collection first implies that in fact the assemblies from which the letters were collected were themselves Marcionite. Not necessarily. Marcion was the son of a bishop in Pontus, a mariner and a rich ship-master who was able to get letters from an...

Re: The fallacy of the "newspaper reporter's" Jesus
I also agree. It does not mean, however, that Paul's letters do not contain any information that is historical or claims to be historical. For example, the letters contain the information that the first Christian communities existed in Jerusalem and Judea. That seems to me either true or a lie or a...

Re: The fallacy of the "newspaper reporter's" Jesus
rgprice has done a fairly good job demonstrating that Paul also used LXX-OT narratives, as have a few other scholars, albeit only in a more piecemeal way, afaik, ie. in journal articles. Yes, I agree. I think that everything in Paul about Jesus comes from the scriptures. Not from an oral tradition....

Re: The fallacy of the "newspaper reporter's" Jesus
I am just saying that it is clear to everyone in the entire world that Paul will never be able to be used as a witness to any historicity or non historicity of any Jesus that we know However, it is Paul who is used by the academic world to defend the historicity of Jesus. Rejecting Paul because he ...
