Re: The Messiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls - Two Suffering Servants in Judea ?
The supreme experts Maurice Baillet and Garcia Martinez got it right. Remember, 2 days ago you said me Geza Vermes was the best. I show you that he think like Esther Eshel and now you already move desperately to another scholars ... The wanna be experts have to attack the vanguards if they are to r...

Re: The Messiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls - Two Suffering Servants in Judea ?
The suffering servants in the Dead Sea scrolls are not messiahs. The Teacher of Righteousness does not identify himself as a messiah. I know of no such scroll that supports Schafer's view. What the Teacher of Righteouness says over and over again is when all is said and done the sons of light will ...

Re: The Messiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls - Two Suffering Servants in Judea ?
Is the angel Michael identified elsewhere with the servant in the DSS? I try to avoid conflating Enochic Judaism with the prophet Isaiah. If you want me to beat to the chase. Jesus is not Michael. Got to keep them separated. I am talking about the servant of Isaiah and the DSS. I did mentioned Jesu...

Re: The Messiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls - Two Suffering Servants in Judea ?
And why would the author of these hymns, identify the teacher of righteousness and Michael with the same messianic attributes ? The identification with the servant of Isaiah is found in other Qumran manuscripts that concern an eschatological messianic and sometimes priest figure. Can the same be sa...

Re: The Messiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls - Two Suffering Servants in Judea ?
The protagonist is either the archangel Michael or Melchizedek if you prefer. My quest is to figure out if the author of the hymn was the Teacher of Righteousness. I think it is highly probable. And why would the author of these hymns, identify the teacher of righteousness and Michael with the same...

Re: Who are the scholars who have denied the historicity of the Teacher of Righteousness?
I believe I once read an article that briefly mentioned one (or more) historians who rejected the historicity of the Teacher. But I would be unable to find the references unfortunately.
This idea has already crossed my mind. It could explain some things but i think he most likely existed.

Re: The Messiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls - Two Suffering Servants in Judea ?
He might be able to get away with that if he only uses (4Q471b) which was edited by Esther Eshel. However, the longer version (4Q491, fr. 11) 'The Song of Michael and the Just', edited by M. Baillet has the line: "None shall come to me for I dwell in...in heaven, and there is no..." The p...

Re: The Celestial Messiah in the parables of Enoch
"Pierce hands and feet" is our translation, but is that what the Psalm said to its readers around the turn of the century give or take a hundred years? I agree Was such a reading/translation evident to anyone before Justin? Yes, sure, the Psalm has several verses that can be used to add c...

Re: The Celestial Messiah in the parables of Enoch
What I am wondering now as a possible answer -- and this comes as a result of having just read Friedlander's two articles on the "Melchizedekites" of pre-Christian times (thanks for alerting me to Friedlander, Giuseppe) and Birger Pearson's discussion of pre-Christian Jewish "Gnostic...

Re: The Celestial Messiah in the parables of Enoch
@Neil The obsession in the christians texts with Psalm 22 seems to indicate that this psalm was particularly read and recited to describe his death. After that there is a certain amount of uncertainty. But I do not see which « prophetic » verse in the whole Tanakh could indicate how the Messiah wil...
