Re: The Celestial Messiah in the parables of Enoch
I have no problem with Jesus/Christ being connected to the scriptures along with his crucifixion.... but why not "connected to the scriptures along with his throat slit like a sacrificial lamb?" Do we have a "prophetic" verse in the scriptures that links the messiah and his thro...

Re: The Celestial Messiah in the parables of Enoch
That may be so, but the problem I have with that explanation is that Paul, from memory, nowhere links the piercing of hands and feet as per Psalm 22 with Jesus. We don't even see that connection in our canonical gospels. A few key lines from Psalm 22 are alluded to in the gospels but not verse 17. ...

Re: The Celestial Messiah in the parables of Enoch
And apart from Isaiah 53, Psalm 22 is undoubtedly the most influential text on the passion of Jesus among Christians. Among the authors of the gospels, in fact. With selected verses from Psalm 22 in the gospels in reverse order (to how they appear in Ps 22) I think the use of Psalm 22 predates Mark...

Re: The Celestial Messiah in the parables of Enoch
But why crucifixion as the manner of death? (Yes, it can be found exegetically by means of the word play, but word play can surely produce the results that one is predisposed to find.) And when was the crucifixion introduced? So for Paul (and most likely for people around him), the Messiah was Pre-...

Re: The Celestial Messiah in the parables of Enoch
In my opinion, i think the first mention of the cross comes from the Epistle of Barnabas that I date before Justin martyr : Barnabas 9:7 Understand ye that He saith the eighteen first, and then after an interval three hundred In the eighteen 'I' stands for ten, 'H' for eight. Here thou hast JESUS (I...

Re: The Celestial Messiah in the parables of Enoch
It is the origin of the crucifixion idea that is the question for me. Isaiah's servant suffers but there is no reference to crucifixion. Why crucifixion, and when, did this notion emerge? What Paul did with the OT is exactly what Mark and Qumran did with the OT : interpreting the Bible as if it was...

Re: The Messiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls - Two Suffering Servants in Judea ?
A good summary on the situation would be Joseph L Angel : https://www.academia.edu/395891/The_Liturgical_Eschatological_Priest_of_the_Self_Glorification_Hymn Thanks for the link. Upon a cursory look I noted that Garcia Martinez agrees with Baillet in that Michael is still the most plausible explana...

You can read his study : https://brill.com/view/book/edcoll/9789004350311/BP000051.xml Thanks for the link. It is a good starting point but the blurb does not make it clear why it can't be the heavenly angel Michael. I will look into it further over the next few days. A good summary on the situatio...
