Re: New discovered Roman amulet mixes Christian and pagan im

I think this reflects our electronic age - Stephan Huller post a link to a twitter post by Archaeology Magazine (saying "A recently discovered Roman amulet mixes Christian and pagan imagery"). I opened it and then the url to the article and posted that url here. But the twitter link and t...

Re: Is There a Trial of Jesus in Luke?

As far as Markan priority goes, there is an example of fatigue in the Sanhedrin scene. The priests call no witnesses (unlike Mark), but when they get the answer from Jesus they want, they ask "what further need have we of witnesses?", echoing Mark's statement, which follows a parade of fal...

Re: Does anyone have access to Taylor & Francis articles?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm actually trying to figure out why Luke 11:16 got stuck where it did.

Why would an amulet that mentions Yahweh be "Christian"?

Re: James ...

A few more data points: Apocryphon of James (c. 150): James is the main disciple who passes on Christian tradition to his "son" Cerinthus. Jesus calls both Peter and James his brothers. No mention of James' death. 1 Apoc James (c. 150): James writes to Addai/Thaddeus, the (mythical?) Syria...

Re: When did belief in an exodus from Egypt emerge?

The exodus story contains two different accounts of the sea crossing — the Deuteronomistic one and the Priestly one. In the former (probably the older one), Yahweh is physically present on the Israelites' behalf, protecting them with a pillar of cloud/fire and throwing the Egyptians into the sea. In...

Re: James ...

I agree, Peter. The 2 Apocalypse of James is particularly early, quite possibly written around the same time as the canonical Gospels.

Re: James ...

Anything's possible, but the earliest attestation for these traditions we have is the aforementioned gnostic texts (1 and 2 Apoc James). In fact, looking over my notes, I get a very strong sense that everything stated as fact about James in the third and fourth centuries comes from a handful of Jaco...

Re: James ...

Regarding the one Gospel of Thomas logion that refers to James the Just, I have no idea how to date it. I think it's generally agreed that Thomas is later than the Synoptic Gospels, and some logia are later than others. Depending on the dating, either Thomas or 2 Apoc James is probably the earliest ...
