Re: Identify this text: Acta Theodati Ancyrani

The citation is very brief. He says (translation mine):

In the Acta Theodati Ancyrani (XXXI), we learn that the pagans called Jesus a ringleader of the Galileans.

Re: Identify this text: Acta Theodati Ancyrani

Ficino, he doesn't, but I think you're on the right track. Patrologia Graeca appears to include four documents by one Theodotus of Ancyra. However, neither has any section numbered XXXI (which is what Ory cites).

Re: Is 'Serious Scholarship' Biased in Favor of Historicity?

As Steven Carr would put it, we know the baptism is historical because two of the Gospels don't mention it. :)

Re: Jesus, Archelaus, and the Parable of the Minas

Could be.

At any rate, a lot of the Herodian stuff in Luke (most of the material obtained from Josephus, it would seem) is absent from Evangelion and probably a later addition to the textual tradition that became canonical Luke.

Identify this text: Acta Theodati Ancyrani

Does anyone know what text Acta Theodati Ancyrani could refer to? I'm currently translating Georges Ory's Analyse des origins chrétiennes into English, and he cites this text on page 60. Google only gives me one hit: a PDF of an academic monograph on Galilean Christianity, which plagiarizes this sec...

Re: Jesus, Archelaus, and the Parable of the Minas

Thanks for the thoughts, Neil. So you would agree then, that comparing the post-Parousia Jesus to a king known for his cruelty was not a problem for the writer/redactor of this passage, but in fact enhanced the intended message. As for Luke correcting Matthew, the more I study this passage, the more...

Re: Jesus, Archelaus, and the Parable of the Minas

Charles, are you saying there are other allusions to Archelaus's temple slaughter in the NT?

Re: Jesus, Archelaus, and the Parable of the Minas

Thanks for the suggestion, Peter. That's the best I've heard so far. It means the interpolator wasn't really concerned about keeping the original parable coherent, but that's not so surprising.

Re: Jesus, Archelaus, and the Parable of the Minas

Okay. Well, I'm sure you're familiar with the parable (Luke 19.11–28) in which a ruler gives ten minas to his slaves before leaving on a journey to receive a kingdom. On his return, he rewards his faithful slaves with cities in the new kingdom. Two verses, however, stick out like a sore thumb from t...

Jesus, Archelaus, and the Parable of the Minas

Hey everyone. Long time no post. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had ideas on why the (partially interpolated) Parable of the Minas (Pounds) in Luke would borrow details from Josephus regarding Archelaus and his trip to Rome. On the face of it, the parable seems intended as an analogy about Christ...
