Re: The Celestial Pole in the Apocalypse
So from all the evidence I have looked at, the Babylonian Leopard (or Panther) has nothing to do with Ursa Minor. That comment is insulting toward Professer Binsbergen and the sources he lists. You are saying these sources, such as Jensen, are not included in what you call "all the evidence&qu...

Re: The Celestial Pole in the Apocalypse
9 April 2014 As I said in the opening post, the Leopard was apparently a Babylonian name for Ursa Minor, What is your evidence for this? The reference linked in the OP is a paper by Wim van Binsbergen, chair of intercultural philosophy, Rotterdam/senior researcher, African Studies Centre, Leiden, ti...

Re: The Celestial Pole in the Apocalypse
I thought it might be a good idea to present evidence that the Greeks were NOT interested in relating their gods to celestial or astral phenomenon The paper you quote does not present any evidence to support your contention. The planets are named after the Roman equivalents of Greek Gods, making it...

Re: Loaves and Fishes
Continuing the Bible analysis, here are my comments on Mark 8:4-7 8:4 His disciples answered him, "From where could one satisfy these people with bread here in a deserted place?" • The idea that we could reconnect to the cosmos to establish a state of grace appears impossible from the pers...

Re: The Celestial Pole in the Apocalypse
The circumpolar stars are in exactly the same relative positions as they were in ancient times except that the pole has moved towards Polaris. Here is Ptolemy's ancient map of the northern sky showing all the relevant constellations. The file is in a Mormon essay but does not add any modern changes....

Re: The Celestial Pole in the Apocalypse
I have to thank Stephan Huller for inspiring me to start this thread. At http://earlywritings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8730#p8730 I responded to his comment about Mandaean interest in the North Celestial Pole, as follows. This post provides context and links for the argument of the opening post, in...

Re: Loaves and Fishes
The testable and logically valid argument is that main symbols in the Bible match to empirical astronomy, and were therefore based on observation. I am responding to your comment "The only discussion with which you will engage is one where you do not feel that your foundations will be threatene...

Re: Loaves and Fishes
Okay fine, "that angle" is an ambiguous phrase. Glad to clear that up. Good example of why to avoid pronouns. The issue is method and foundations. I do not think it is wilfully evil, even with the hyperbole ratcheted down, for anyone to question my foundations. Foundationalism within philo...

Re: Loaves and Fishes
It is not at all a matter of me feeling wounded about being insulted by Neil as I thought his comment was so wacky as to be seen as ridiculous. This can be brushed off as exuberance. My point is simply that Godfrey made a claim, and when I called him on it he denied he had made the claim, even thoug...
