Re: Surprising List of Scholars Who Date Pilate to 18 CE

Josephus is clear that God intended for him to go to over to the Romans to be a testament to and to document how the Jews fell from God's favor.

Re: Josephus and Dating Pilate

Wow. Some folks here are really aiming to shoot down Josephus. If he didn't have the two references to Jesus, would you be so quick to pull the trigger on this great man? "Wars" is a fantastic read and afterward you'll know he didn't make it all up- or any of it. Incredible detail and insi...

Re: Josephus and Dating Pilate

Josephus in his writings comments on his view of history and how he views his role as a historian. It was very much like the attitude of modern historians. Certainly the cannibalism that he noted in wars can be question, but I doubt that any among us have undergone an ordeal such as the Jews did who...

Re: Josephus and Dating Pilate

You have to accept Josephus at face value- he is our only source on most things. If you challenge Josephus, you have to be on VERY solid ground. And you simply are not. What can be derived from Josephus might be personally repugnant to you, but it doesn't advance the ball to make illogical and criti...

Re: Surprising List of Scholars Who Date Pilate to 18 CE

You can bet that there were dozens of Roman aristocrats who would have loved to get a plum assignment in the East with all the money they could make. In fact, Lamnia was given the Presidency of Syria just for that purpose- he was a good old boy and his family needed the money. During his tenure, he ...

Re: Josephus and Dating Pilate

MaryHelen-Josephus was BORN in A.D. 37. I cannot believe that a man of his capacity would mix up Gratus and Pilate- not only in Antiquities but Wars.

Re: Mark, the Jews and the destruction of the temple

Which siege?

In A.D. 70, it started during the Passover (trapping many worshipers in the city) but it lasted for months longer.

Re: Surprising List of Scholars Who Date Pilate to 18 CE

What is missing here are the details of Roman history during this period. Hagen in "Year of the Passover" goes into this-indeed, it appears to be the purpose of his work. If we look closely at the actions of the newly appointed Syrian president Lucius Vitellius, a late crucifixion date for...
