Re: The Ehrman - Carrier Spat - Round 2?
Josephus trained as a Priest in the Second Temple, and probably knew Ananus, Caiaphas, and the whole bunch- though he was a generation or two younger. And he wrote about Jewish history. How does that NOT make him a Jewish historian? But give Erdman credit. He gets paid. How much money has Jenny McCa...

Re: DSS Teacher of Righteousness and the Josephan James
By the term "the Josephan writer" do you mean Flavius Josephus? Is this a backhanded way of suggesting that his works were authored by someone else, or maybe by a group of people? Ananus and his son were likely killed in A.D. 69, before the final siege of Jerusalem was begun by the Romans,...

Sidon was the capitol of Phoenicia, now called Saida. It was a major city in ancient times- on the Mediterranean Sea- twenty miles north of Tyre.

Re: Gospel of Thomas? Pre or Post Synoptics?
"In my opinion, the Gospel of Thomas (40-60 C.E.) significantly predates the much more advanced NT gospels (circa 140-200)."

Not to seem obvious, why don't you read the passages in Josephus instead of relying on Wiki? Nobody, including Schurer or even Joe Cephus, gives a continuous chronological narrative, so it has to be pieced together from isolated passages in War and Ant. I need a framework to work from. "first rate sources" - sounds like confirmation bias more than an objective statement. steve43 wrote:Several characters are common to the New Testament and the secular works, and so a time line can be created. Which ones? in what way? It is widely agreed the references to Jesus in Antiquit...

I have recommended Hagan's work, which Helen bought and derided for its "simplistic" reliance on the inherent truth of the works of Josephus. But therein she labels herself as someone who has an agenda- one that obviously is not supported by Josephus. For the serious historian, or someone ...
