Re: Why the Certainty on the Part of Mythicists?

Why is it obvious that Julius was resurrected from the dead the way Jesus was alleged to be resurrected from the dead? ' I did not say it was obvious that he was resurrected the same way Jesus was. I simply gave you the example you requested. OK, so produce your examples of ancient people claiming ...

Re: Why the Certainty on the Part of Mythicists?

This has the effect that the claim that early Christians believed that Jesus had not died on earth but only in some heavenly realm can IMO correctly be regarded as fringe. (On the basis, among other grounds, that ancient people didn't think like that.) The claim that early Christians believed that ...

Re: Why the Certainty on the Part of Mythicists?

OK, so produce your examples of ancient people claiming that historical persons had been resurrected from the dead and raised into heaven. We want to see the parallels between pagan religions and Christianity before we can accept that ancient people really did think like that. If there are no such ...

Re: Why the Certainty on the Part of Mythicists?

Paul clearly regards the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus as having come to an end. How far this involves an explicit belief in a post-resurrection post-appearances ascension is unclear. Andrew Criddle How did Paul then speak to Jesus in 2 Corinthians 12 if the appearances had ended? And didn...

Re: Why the Certainty on the Part of Mythicists?

The problem is even more astounding when you realize that Hurtado actually believes that early Christians experienced "visions of Jesus in Heaven" because Jesus really was in heaven and revealing himself in all his glory to the saints , and early Christian "creative interpretation of...

Re: Why the Certainty on the Part of Mythicists?

Professor Larry Hurtado has an excellent article explaining that early Christian interest in Jesus was fuelled by visions of Jesus in Heaven, creative interpretation of scripture and prophetic oracles. http://larryhurtado.wordpress.com/2014/03/19/messiah-and-worship/ This seems almost as though myth...

Re: Why the Certainty on the Part of Mythicists?

IMHO the issue is not that mythicists claim dogmatically that there was no historical Jesus. The issue is the claim that some reasonably specific alternative, (e.g. the idea that Christianity started with the worship of an obviously non-historical figure who was later historicized), is probably tru...

Re: Why the Certainty on the Part of Mythicists?

Why do mythicists seem to argue that the existing evidence is on the one hand so weak that it provides no evidence FOR a historical Jesus but strangely is 'so strong' that they can have certainty that Jesus never existed? Good point. It is a bit like claiming the evidence that Superman exists is so...

Re: Thoughts on Maurice Casey's new book

Why are we all discussing this book?

Bart Ehrman claimed on the 12th of March 2014 that the book is not out yet and thinks it amazing that anybody can have written a review of it before it is out.

And we all know the quality of Bart's research....
