Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

Thank you for these arguments, John2. They are valuable observations and I'm still open-minded about the identities of WP, ToR, and MotL. Also, the Wicked Priest's "furious"/"hot" anger towards the Teacher is mentioned in the DSS with no reconciliation, but Agrippa is said to hav...

Peter Kirby wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 7:27 am ... Origen (who didn't know the TF) ...
I'm actually starting to doubt that. I mean Origen could know about the non-interpolated TF.

Re: Wouldn't Eusebius have been concerned about getting caught and called out if he had written the Testimonium himself?

What the critics are really asking is: why doesn't Eusebius comment on each of the ways the Testimonium supports his apologetic arguments after quoting the Testimonium? It might look something like this: See how Josephus questions whether it is appropriate to call Jesus a mere wise man, as Porphy d...

Re: Wouldn't Eusebius have been concerned about getting caught and called out if he had written the Testimonium himself?

That argument doesn't really make any sense, because the whole point of the passage is to show his miracles were known to multitudes and that it is through miracles he compelled the multitudes. That Josephus merely says he performed miracles in and of itself is not the part he wants, he wants the m...

Re: Wouldn't Eusebius have been concerned about getting caught and called out if he had written the Testimonium himself?

If you accept that the TF is probably a Christian work in its entirety, on what basis would you say it is probably not by Eusebius? Actually, while researching this matter, I changed my mind about TF. Now I think it has a pre-Eusebian core and the final form is post-Eusebian. What changed my mind? ...

Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

the Wicked Priest had visited to Teacher's "exiled house" somewhere out in the wilderness in order to "destroy" or "confuse" him there. You also said this (in other thread): I think "confuse" (bala) is better understood here as "to destroy" rather t...

Re: Hypothesis: Wicked Priest = Herod Agrippa I, Teacher of Righteousness = Simeon of Jerusalem, Man of the Lie = Paul

For me it boils down to Agrippa not being a priest, "wicked" or not. But he was from a priestly family, wasn't he? From Wikipedia : However, through his grandmother, Mariamne the Hasmonean, Agrippa belonged to a priestly family , which Herod did not. He was thus the first Herodo-Hasmonean...

Yes, please do read the article. I'll have more to say about your comments in this post, and any others you might have, once you have read it. So I've read the article and it has great arguments for supporting the hypothesis for Eusebian forgery of TF. I would even suggest that this should be the d...

Re: Key Concepts from Anthony Grafton Forgers & Critics (1990)

Grafton discusses some very learned men who created forgeries, most notably Erasmus of Rotterdam (c. 1466-1536). Interesting. Did Erasmus wrote Julius Excluded from Heaven ? If not, maybe the author of Julius Excluded from Heaven wrote De duplici martyrio . I read here that the language is similar....

Re: "Teacher of Righteousness" and "Wicked Priest" identities

I think this sounds like Peter, someone who led an assembly (ecclessia, same word for church) in Jerusalem who was very accurate in the knowledge of the law, gave speeches and had a run-in with Agrippa. I operate under the assumption that the author of Acts knew Josephus and I think they spun this ...
