Re: Gary Goldberg, 'The Coincidences of the Emmaus Narrative of Luke and the Testimonium of Josephus'

Tenorikuma wrote in the 2014 post this: Coins minted by Judaean prefects are usually distinctive to the prefect in question. The 24 CE issue by Gratus is virtually identical in design to his 18 CE issue. Only the date is different. https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/judaea/valerius_gratus/t.html...

Re: Mark Goodacre, 'Parallel Traditions or Parallel Gospels? John's Gospel as a Re-Imagining of Mark'

The tradition that John was later than and knew the other canonical gospels seems to have been known already in the time of Clement of Alexandria, according to Eusebius of Caesraea: Yes, it seems so but I have my doubts in this case (just doubts, I'm really not sure). So Eusebius wrote: The Gospel ...

Re: Papias as the oldest witness of the Gospel of Peter

My guess is that the Gospel of Peter was written around 40 AD and it's just a second-hand eyewitness account. I consider similarities with Rev 6, eclipse, Temple destruction, and Elxai as very weak.

Re: Mark Goodacre, 'Parallel Traditions or Parallel Gospels? John's Gospel as a Re-Imagining of Mark'

Confirmation of a detail in a story does not confirm the whole story. Yeah, it seems like an obvious fallacy but I wouldn't be surprised if somebody made that mistake. I often see the reverse version of this fallacy being made even by scholars. For example, some scholars find fictional elements in ...

Re: Mark Goodacre, 'Parallel Traditions or Parallel Gospels? John's Gospel as a Re-Imagining of Mark'

So it seems Jerome was right ( De Viris Illustribus , 9): John, the apostle whom Jesus most loved, the son of Zebedee and brother of James, the apostle whom Herod, after our Lord's passion, beheaded, most recently of all the evangelists wrote a Gospel , at the request of the bishops of Asia, against...

maryhelena wrote: Sat Aug 03, 2024 1:57 am Why would the Acts of Pilate placed its Jesus crucifixion story in the 7th year of Tiberius ?
Maybe the author of the pagan Acts of Pilate just misread the V. consulship of Tiberius (AD 31) as his IV. consulship (AD 21).

Re: "Teacher of Righteousness" and "Wicked Priest" identities

It seems to me that the 'violet among the nations' are, first, Gentiles (Nations), and second, Gentiles that obtained power over both the Pharisses and the Sadducees. This would seem to be the Romans who took over Judea in 63 BCE under Pompey, or at least the Romans would seem to be the best fit. T...

Re: The Testimonium Flavianum Recensions

I think I've changed my mind and now I think that the Separated Edition was earlier than the Chronograph indeed. Now I think it was first done by a Russian Christian (so not by a Jew) and later on, it was added to the Chronograph together with some other Christian additions, maybe as a reaction to ...

Re: The Testimonium Flavianum Recensions

Or are you suggesting that Meshchersky's source theory is mistaken and the Slavonic version of Josephus' Jewish War (which Meshchersky calls the Separated Edition) is older than the Chronograph... Re: The Testimonium Flavianum Recensions

The Greek text of the Jewish War mentions Mannaeus, the son of Lazarus (i.e., a Hellenized form of the fairly common Hebrew name Eleazar). In the Slavonic, he is identified as Mannaeus, the nephew of Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the grave [already] decayed. This presupposes the story of the rais...
