Re: The Historicity of "Post Resurrection" Jesus

It's weird to say that over 500 people "at one time" came to a conclusion from their study of the scriptures. Perhaps a little odd. But not as weird as the other options. It would be weirder yet for 500 people to all have the very same hallucination or very same religious vision all “at o...

Re: A Flawed Man --- Like All Men Are

One more parting note --- for those interested in Paul, the man. Studying these passages are what first led me to see the human behind the letters ----

Re: A Flawed Man --- Like All Men Are

Authentic is not the best term, and one I’ve used out of habit. As I have discussed in other threads, IMO these 5 letters are relatively intact, certainly not pristine, but not hopelessly compromised either. Just my opinion of course. “Proof” is a term I have studiously tried to avoid in discussions...

A Flawed Man --- Like All Men Are

In order to understand Paul, IMO, some background certainly helps --- a study of early 1st C. Jewish thought and the cultures of Celtic Anatolia, Ephesus, Macedonia, and Greece --- and recognizing how the final compiler left the extant 2 Corinthians as a compilation of more than one letter with part...

Re: Authentic Paulines --- An Oxymoron?

Thanks. Have you written elsewhere why you don't consider Romans authentic? I’ve touched on the issue in a few responses on this forum, but have not posted anything resembling a fuller treatment. I’m working on such ---- but for so many, Romans is the touchstone, Paul’s flag-ship letter. I don’t wa...

Re: Authentic Paulines --- An Oxymoron?

Stephan, You’re grasping at straws with your rejection of my use of “unaffiliated Pauline-oriented congregations”, in the context in which I used it. Many critical scholars see evidence of Pauline-oriented groups that were not clearly associated with proto-orthodox doctrines or Marcionite doctrines....

Re: Authentic Paulines --- An Oxymoron?

In this post, I will present arguments in support of five authentic and relatively intact extant letters from Paul --- certainly not pristine, but not hopelessly compromised either. Robert, did you identify which five letters you think were written by Paul? I couldn't find a list in your post. I've...

Re: Authentic Paulines --- An Oxymoron?

Where do you robertj see evidence of 'unaffiliated Pauline communities'? Seems to me to be nothing more than a product of your imagination. All we have is (a) Irenaeus's statements about what Paul believed and (b) an echo sometimes faint of what objections the heretics had or the alleged 'incorrect...

Authentic Paulines --- An Oxymoron?

One of the most difficult questions facing the concept of authentic canonical letters of Paul is how the letters could have survived the century intact --- the century or more between Paul’s writing and the oldest extant Pauline manuscript. A remarkably complete manuscript of Paul’s canonical letter...

Re: Patristics BELIEVED Paul Had a Written Gospel --- So Wha

So these texts came to us without the aid of the Church Fathers? How do you think these beloved texts of yours were preserved? Were they delivered by the same stork that brought you to your mother? Only a small mind can love the fruit but hate the tree. Your ad-hominems tell much more about you tha...
