Trobisch proposes just that in his book. Hell, you'd think the critical apparati would but no, they sub the word in.

True, but that leaves the possibility it mentions Pilate's ultimate disposition after Gaius. Still not a book about Pilate it would seem, plus it should b cited as his reasoning if this is the case.

This reads to me that there was more to follow, granted I had to look up what palinode means, but it suggests a poetic reversal of position previously taken.

Perhaps this: "We have now related in a concise and summary manner the cause of the hatred of Gaius to the whole nation of the Jews; we must now proceed to make our palinode to Gaius."

I don't have Carrier's book so I'm not sure all what he's citing

The question is: what is the best guess based on the data available? Are there any other options for IC XC that are as strong as "Jesus Christ"? I honestly don't know. I'll plead my ignorance at this point. But I'll leave it there, since it is off-topic. It sounds like an important topic ...
