Re: Questions about Dating 1 Clement
One should note that Joseph Turmel's claim that Hermas was the brother of Pope Pius is mainly based on the Muratorian canon list. IF the modern scholars who date this list c 300 CE (rather than c 200 CE) are correct then its value as historical evidence for the authorship of Hermas would be much re...

billd, if you haven't read Margaret Barker's The Great Angel: A Study of Israel's Second God yet I highly recommend it to you. IMO she conclusivly demonstrates some of gnosticisms origins in these very Jewish debates and intertextual exegesis.

Re: The Social Context of 'Resurrection'
The force of this social norm is apparent in the treatment of 'returning bodies' in this neglected passage of Plutarch (Moralia 264-265), the case of the "hysteropotmoi' : "Why is it that those [Romans] who are falsely reported to have died in a foreign country, even if they return, men d...

Re: The utter insignificance of John the Bapist in Mark
This "prophet"? He enters the Stage in Mark 1:4 and exits in Mark 1:9, and the rest indeed is chatter about him. But let me humour you and give you a full summary of all the times that either John or his supposed core business is mentioned in Mark: BOOK OF Mark Chapter 1 The Mission of Jo...

Re: Why did the Gnostics use Paul and Gospels?
I suppose one would have to decide if Markion was as rabidly anti-jewish as the CF claim he was, and themselves actually were,or if he was actually in a jewish/semitic/samaritan tradition and was critical of of the reigning temple tradition/political power/philosophical school etc and multiple combi...

Re: Evidence of a common editor across NT works?
Also, we shouldn’t forget how much evidence there is that many changes continued beyond the late 2nd century. No first edition of a literary publication, however classic, escapes re-editing, additions, alterations. <strike>STAR WARS</strike> New Testament Special Edition Imagine if they called it “...
