Re: Dating of Daniel
Jayson, Prior to the exile we don't see the term Jew. So while your comments make sense, they do not account for the absence of the use of the term. In fact, outside of Nehemiah and Esther we barely see it at all. We never see it in Daniel. There is the famous line in 2 Kings and Isaiah Eliakim, She...

Re: Dating of Daniel
A propos of which, have you read this article, by Nadav Na'aman? http://www.ericlevy.com/Revel/Intro2/Na'aman,%20Nadav%20-%20Habiru%20and%20Hebrews-the%20transfer%20of%20a%20social%20term%20to%20the%20literary%20sphere.pdf I think the argument put forward - linking Habiru and Hebrew, but in terms o...

Re: Dating of Daniel
Andrew Criddle made a comment above about Daniel 1-6 possibly being written before Maccabean times, but offered no supporting evidence. Konrad Schmid discusses this in - The Old Testament: A Literary History - http://www.amazon.com/The-Old-Testament-Literary-History/dp/0800697758/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&...

Re: Dating of Daniel
I agree on your outline of providence timeline; for clarity, I was only answering to the query regarding the DSS copy. If we are discussing the absolute origin, as you state, that is a slippery question and depends, as you note, on which way the question is asked. The first "Hebrew" copy ...

Re: Help on m'Avodah Zarah and Mekhilta of Rabbi Ishmael
It's not possible to say something in the Talmud is first century, although Andrew certainly did a fine job of showing how it might be done. If this was the price is right, Yadin/Ficino would probably win. A lot of the conjecture is based on whether the sages of Babylon knew about the Palestinian Ta...

Re: Who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls?
Does anyone know of an analysis of the Biblical books? All translations have to be limited to those fragments that can be made sense of in some reasonable way, otherwise what are you really "translating"? ... DCH Thanks for the advice. I read there is not all that much there in many cases...

Re: Who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls?
Spin posted: "Jesus, what a hopeless case you [John T] are. The name is Yizhar Hirschfeld. Check it out. He was an archaeologist at Tel Aviv University who had a long respected career." Sorry but it his name was spelled: "Yizahan Hirshfeld". Now if you still don't believe me, th...

Re: Who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls?
I've been looking for a listing of the differences between the DSS and the Masoretic Text, etc. So I thought the book noted by John T - The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English would be useful, especially as it's written by Geza Vermes. However on Amazon, a reviewer notes that only the Apocrypha is ...

Re: Priestly Backbiting in the Tanakh
The trap I meant was the dubious Hebrew analysis of Milgrom, I've made worse mistakes, probably even today. I don't disagree with your analysis, other than the issue about the dating (which we probably actually agree on). I know Milgrom's work a little, and one of his habits is taking something that...
