Re: Can you confirm the Jewish view of our elevation in Eden
Seriously? Yes Seriously. I brought this up to cover the possibility that perhaps Jewish gnostic texts were destroyed by Jews who considered them heretical. There are no Jewish gnostic texts, or any special reason to believe that there were before Christianity. I also showed how the possible destru...

Re: Can you confirm the Jewish view of our elevation in Eden
No I meant Jews, GB shows a picture of Nazis burning books. The Christians used to burn the Talmud, which was a big problem because the thing is so expensive. However, Christians are not Jews by definition, and there were only a few Jewish generals and admirals in the Wehrmacht, so Nazis are usually...

Re: Can you confirm the Jewish view of our elevation in Eden
You are comfy giving Christians the credit for a Jewish myth. Ok. I agree and believe that Gnostic Christianity was the original Christianity and came from the Jewish Kabbala. He was a Universalist type of God of peace whereas Rome wanted a Gods of war. Rome won and wrote Jesus up their way. You wi...

Re: 50 people in the Hebrew Bible also in archaeology
We're starting to use big words here so I should probably retire but The Tel Dan Inscription: A Reappraisal and a New Introduction by George Athas http://www.amazon.com/The-Tel-Dan-Inscription-Introduction/dp/0567040437 has to be the key resource. This is Robert Chisolm's review - http://www.dts.edu...

Re: 50 people in the Hebrew Bible also in archaeology
The lack of a dot could also be because there was no space. I think it's just inconclusive. I don't say it can't be a reference to a Davidic dynasty, but it's not a sure thing. For all we know, the Davidic legend could have grown from the place name in a manner analogous to Romulus and Rome. Yeah, ...

Re: 50 people in the Hebrew Bible also in archaeology
The standard answer to the lack of a dot seems to be that the writer made a mistake. If you assume this however, that's got to put at least an asterisk by the reference to David. The guy is writing a Stele for his king before they had worker protection laws... maybe I guess. My understanding is that...

Re: 50 people in the Hebrew Bible also in archaeology
I gave a link in the post above Diogenes to George Athas who is an expert on the subject and a non-minimalist. The Rev Dr George Athas http://www.moore.edu.au/faculty-members/george-athas Lemke's argument is the most widely known criticism of bytdvd, but it is hardly convincing. I'm not completely s...

Re: Can you confirm the Jewish view of our elevation in Eden
Can you confirm the Jewish view of our elevation in Eden? As others have no doubt noted, there is rarely 'a' Jewish view. I did a little reading on this. There was an older view that Gnosticism started in Judaism prior to Christianity. This is puzzling because, assuming a guy with Gnostic in his na...

Re: 50 people in the Hebrew Bible also in archaeology
Nothing on that list is surprising or controversial except David, which is a little strained. I understand your comment regarding Solomon, but why do you consider the Tel Dan reference strained? I don't completely understand this myself but "bytdvd" which looks like the house of David, do...

Re: Genesis 1 & 2
Some of stuff I read yesterday reminded me of the orality issues we discussed in the Early Writing Errors thread. This is a totally new concept to me (like rabbinic orality was a few months ago).
