Re: Codex Sinaiticus - the white parchment Friderico-Augustanus
We know for sure that the manuscript had been used for book repairs in St. Catherine's monastery long before Tischendorf was born. Why anyone is trying to judge Tischendorf's character in order to gauge the age of the manuscript is beyond me. Who cares? It doesn't matter.

Re: If No New Information, Data, Material Emerges About Christianity What's There to Write About?
I can see the argument that the study of early Christianity was 'stuck' in religious concepts/faith and needed to be 'updated' into a science. I can see that we haven't sufficiently considered whether Jesus was a real historical person. But is there really so many points of view that haven't been p...

Re: The relationship between Genesis and apocryphal accounts...
The flood story is a good example for the point that the original stories must have put the blame mostly on the Gods. In the Mesopotamian version, it's the god Enki who teaches the chief god Enlil, who ordered the flood, a lesson. You can still find that idea in the Bible story, if you look closely,...

Re: better critiques of mythicism than by Tim O'Neill
This is not so clear: On the other hand, for the Greek-speaking part of Christianity, it was always clear that this is a very common name. Was Iesous a common name among the Greeks? Before or After Christianity took off (or both)? Were Y'hoshua or Y'shua common names among the Jews of antiquity? In...

I didn't know about that passage, which is it please? It's about Acts 15 (NRSV): "15 This agrees with the words of the prophets, as it is written, 16 ‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the dwelling of David, which has fallen; from its ruins I will rebuild it, and I will set it up, 1...

Re: better critiques of mythicism than by Tim O'Neill
The Septuagint "feature" occurs only very sporadic, and is certainly not a rule. Every single Septuagint that we have is passed on by Christians in Christian writing and it is clear that their tried to insert Ihsous as a Tanakh source for the IS in the NT; especially Vaticanus is obvious ...

Re: better critiques of mythicism than by Tim O'Neill
And there's the issue of why Iesus [Latin] became Jesus in English yet Y'hoshua/Y'shua became Joshua ie. that also helps sideline or indeed does outright sideline the issue about the origins of the name Jesus That step happened during the translation from Greek to Latin, and the latter informed how...

Re: better critiques of mythicism than by Tim O'Neill
Including the failure to adequately explain why Jesus is "actually, in fact, the name Joshua". While I see your other point, isn't this kind of a given? At least in the Greek language Septuaginta, the name "Iesous" is used for both, Joshua, the alleged conqueror of Canaan, and t...

Re: Dating Acts
In order to prove that my asking John T for citations is not discriminatory, would you be kind enough to give to me any citation? Sure. if you look into a standard introduction to the New Testament for students of theology, you get this for Udo Schnelle, Einleitung in das Neue Testament, Vandenhoek...

Re: Dating Acts
As for me (and feel free to ignore it, as I've said it a number of times before elsewhere), I've been stuck on the idea that Acts was written c. 95 CE... That's pretty much the standard dating. Most New Testament scholars date the text between 95 and 100. If you want to include nearly everyone, it'...
