Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

^I think you're mistaken in thinking I'm arguing that "rulers of this age" refers to Pilate. That is not my position.

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

^I'm not talking "knowledge", but most reasonable hypotheses. Whether they make your or my grades of "knowledge" is a different question. I wasn't making a "proposition", but an observation: That the Carrier-Doherty hypothesis requires Paul not to refer to Earthly ruler...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

To maryhelena and MrMacSon: I haven't offered a "false dichotomy". It would be a false dichotomy if I said: "if Paul did mean it as in any way referring to Earthly rulers, then historicity is correct and mythicism is false." But that's not what I said. What I said was: "if P...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

^I think this line is more crucial for the Carrier-Doherty hypothesis than for historicists. Historicist positions can handle "rulers of this age" to refer to Earthly rulers, generic forces of evil, Satan and his demons, or some combination of these (my suspicion). But the Carrier-Doherty ...

Re: Reissue of Morton Smith's "Jesus the Magician"

^I guess I'm old fashioned. I like hard copies of things - CDs, books etc. Have always had a "collectors" bug. I like sorting out collections, putting things on a shelf and feeling a sense of gratification. Put it down to my evolutionary history to hunt and gather LOL.

Reissue of Morton Smith's "Jesus the Magician"

Morton Smith's 1978 classic "Jesus the Magician" has just been reissued, with a new forward by Bart Ehrman. http://www.bookdepository.com/Jesus-Magician-Morton-Smith/9781571747150 I've had this on my 'to read' list for a while. But up until now, copies have been hard to track down at a rea...

Re: Ehrman's "How Jesus Became a God" is now out.

^Ehrman doesn't think Jesus and John the Baptist were necessarily Essenes, only Essene-like. The book we're discussing here isn't about the Historical Jesus, it's more about the beliefs about him from Paul's time to Nicaea. There is a brief section on the Historical Jesus, but if you're interested i...

Re: Ehrman's "How Jesus Became a God" is now out.

^Eisenman? Do you mean Ehrman? Eisenman doesn't conclude much about the historical Jesus from memory, but implies strongly that he was likely much like his brother James - something of a strict observer of the Torah and somewhat zealot-like. I don't think he goes as far as SGF Brandon in claiming Je...
