Re: Judean / jew /Hebrew in all of the NT

Hebrew is almost always used as reference a language. It's use as a translation is meant to convey antiquity of the religion, and being originally from the Jewish Hebrew speakers (although the text is Aramaic). Looking at other uses of Hebrew, there are three main possibilities: 1) generally meaning...

Re: Papias said Mark wrote his Gospel out of order

I don't think Papias existed. Or more accurately the "venerable father" --Παπίας being a fictional aptronym-- is a reference to a long deceased legendary church father (saint) who's "name" was attached to a later tract. The tract is addressing a time when it was accepted that the...

Re: Evangelion of Marcion (as reconstructed by Wautier)

I very much wonder if Waultier has not mistaken commentary on known Marcionite doctrinal teaching, something Marcionite teachers would use in their hermeneutic explanation of scripture, for the text itself. Why? If we have Irenaeus who accused Marcion about his Christ saving the Genesiac Serpent, t...

We need a Marcion Seminar
We need the equivalent of a UBS committee to develop a critical text, if that's possible.

Re: Evangelion of Marcion (as reconstructed by Wautier)

[Preamble] I've made some Marcionite text reconstructions (none I feel is final or definitive, although some elements I feel more strongly are correct than others), and I have come to the opinion that there is no single systemic method to find the Marcionite text. And that may be a misnomer anyway,...

Re: Placement of the Gospels by the editor

P45 is dated paleographically to the mid-3rd century. However this method is unreliable and can be off by well over a century. It could well date into the mid 4th century or even later. I was very surprised to see the age range of various studies on P52 gives ranges from essentially early 1st centur...

Re: Placement of the Gospels by the editor

The Western order competed with the final Canonical order, and is endorsed by many of the fathers. That order put the apostles (the twelve) prior to those of their disciples (sometimes said to be the seventy). So Matthew and John then Luke (a disciple of Paul) and Mark (a disciple of Peter) was the o...

Re: The 115 1/2 Years 1/2 Months Between Christ and Marcion and the Acts of Pilate 21 CE Dating of the Crucifixion

144 CE is the date that seems used most often. However I have come to the opinion that the person of Marcion (Mark) is no more real than Paul or Peter or Luke or Andrew or John. I think Marcion (Mark) is merely the patron saint of a movement. Tertullian thinks he is real and dates his gospel to the ...
