Re: Dating Paul's letters

Giuseppe, Distant past means beyond living memory of those mid-2nd century Marcionites who collected and edited the text. Their own founder, or rather the one they claim as founder, was probably none other than the legendary apostle Mark, whom they said was their first bishop. I'm not at all convinc...

Re: Dating Paul's letters

I see this change from Marcionite form to Catholic form as an example of church growth between the two versions more than anything theological. There is no doubt the proto-orthodox held in their arsenal their skill of exegesis of the OT to support their arguments. This is less a case of the materia...

Re: Dating Paul's letters

Neil, I think you dodged the main question, which is explain what you mean by a factory. Is there a directive going on? To me that seems rather conspiratorial, so I'm disinclined to accept such speculation. That is the conceptual problem I see. You used the word "factory" but I prefer the...

Re: Dating Paul's letters

Neil, I like to dig down to the root of the text to see who wrote what. I'm not satisfied looking at the finished product after multiple revisions and saying "yes, this was the original intent." As for the factory concept, I think you are creating new language for something conceptually al...

Re: Dating Paul's letters

Which Paul, Catholic or Marcionite text? Or perhaps pre-Marcionite text? Dunno.... I'm just looking at how sections of letters appear to be midrashic rewritings of passages in the OT. Example, https://vridar.org/2020/12/23/pauls-letters-as-re-written-scripture/ including links in there. This is a f...

Re: Dating Paul's letters

I still see most of these fragments as 2nd century, but certainly one could argue that some of the tracts could be 1st century. What has been registering more with me in the past year or so are the indications that so much in the epistles appear to be based on Old Testament passages. As such, they ...

Re: Dating Paul's letters

Neil, There is an interesting theory John Knox put out ( Marcion and the New Testament: An Essay in the Early History of the Canon , 1942, University of Chicago Press), which Dr. Robert Price supports (e.g., The Colossal Apostle , chapter 12), that the first two chapters (Marcionite form) were writ...

Re: Dating Paul's letters

The problem for people who claim Marcion is not early than the Canonical Paul or Gospel (of Luke) is they have to explain the missing vocabulary.

I have never seen that done.

Re: Dating Paul's letters

Assuming those two things are reporting actual historical fact, then that places Paul around 50 CE. If the letters of Paul were written in the Second Century CE, we'd have to ask: what was the Second Century view of James? If that view was that the Gospel accounts were reliable and that the James t...
